What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking an enthusiastic R&D Electrical Engineer to join our Inertial Sensors & Surveillance team, supporting the sustainment, safety, and security of the Nation's Stockpile. This role involves partnering with Surveillance Engineers to forecast future support, material quotes, and coordinating with team leadership and Systems Engineers to address product-related inquiries.

This position emphasizes surveillance work, stockpile management, data analysis, and involvement in various programs, with a focus on analog and digital circuit designs.. You will conduct data analysis to ensure data integrity and present findings to Systems Teams. Maintain close interactions and engage with key Systems Partners in California, Pantex, and Kansas City. This position demands exceptional communication and presentation skills. Given the data-intensive nature of the position, a robust background in testing methodologies and proven troubleshooting abilities are essential for effectively diagnosing and resolving circuit performance issues. You will be expected to not only evaluate circuit performance but also to contextualize your findings within the larger framework of the stockpile's integrity and security. Your ability to synthesize and convey this information will be vital in driving informed decision-making and fostering collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Develop detailed knowledge of the product, its functionality, and the product testers
  • Daily coordination with Production Agency to support component assembly, surveillance and testing processes
  • Develop troubleshooting, re-work, and re-test plans for failing product
  • Create and review Engineering Authorizations as needed to disposition units to continue in production or during surveillance activities.
  • Work with Technical Writers to create, review and release program technical or process documents

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite

Salary Range

$117,500 - $235,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE) Q level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire

The ideal Electrical Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate well in a multidisciplinary team of designers and test engineers.
  • Outstanding verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Technical background in complex electronic components, including circuit board design and analysis of electronic controllers or RF radar
  • Demonstrated teamwork, delegation, and conflict resolution within a team and its leadership
  • Ability to balance multiple, sometimes conflicting priorities while meeting project due dates.
  • Experience with Nuclear Deterrence practices and procedures, engineering authorizations and Realize Product.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including the development and delivery of presentations, proposals, reports, specifications, test plans, and other documentation.
  • Experience troubleshooting product circuitry and/or test equipment issues.
  • Technical knowledge of both analog and digital circuitry.
  • Experience with SPICE circuit simulation tools.
  • Up to 15% travel to support troubleshooting, project meetings, and other production support requirements
  • Cost estimation of labor and materials required for proposed tasks to be completed for the fiscal year
  • Management of budget and spending during the fiscal year
About Our Team

The Inertial Sensors and Surveillance Department supports the development of inertial sensing devices and surveillance of Major Nuclear Deterrent (ND) Components. The department is currently focused on the development of the W93/Mk7 Path Length Module (PLM) and provides ongoing production support for the W88 Alt 370 and Mk21 PLMs. Additionally, the department regularly carries out stockpile surveillance and management required to maintain certain arming and fuzing electronic sub-systems in the active stockpile. The department supports all three legs of the nuclear weapons triad through SLBM, ICBM, and gravity delivered devices.

Posting Duration

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
