Position Summary

The Engineer I Intern applies a working knowledge of engineering fundamentals to the Marine Services Division's (MSD) engineering and design activities in Chesapeake, VA. This role operates under the direction of Project Engineers and/or the Design Engineering Manager and will support work on the Navy's Dry Deck Shelters and other Programs of Record. The Engineer I Intern will also be required to interact with other company personnel including those in QA, Manufacturing, Purchasing, Shipping and Receiving, as necessary to provide engineering support to manufacturing, integration, and test activities.


Duties And Responsibilities
  • Perform basic engineering tasks and conventional design work that may vary in scope and complexity.
  • Demonstrate sound technical judgment along with independent evaluation, originality, and ingenuity.
  • Participate actively in design reviews as a contributing member of the design team.
  • Prepare engineering change documentation, including CRs, LARs, and DFSs, in support of project needs.
  • Develop and review engineering tools, calculation packages, technical reports, and drawings.

MECHANICAL INTERNS:

  • Assist in the development and review of Finite Element Analyses (FEA).
  • Support the 3D printing of components and assemblies.
  • Assist with CAD modeling and the design of new components and assemblies using SolidWorks.

ELECTRICAL INTERNS:

  • Assist with electrical component design and the development of electrical schematics.
  • Support the development of SolidWorks 3D Electrical processes, procedures, and templates.

Qualifications

REQUIRED:

  • Must be in pursuit of a bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Ocean, Nuclear, or similar) or Naval Architecture from accredited college or university. Preference is for rising Juniors or Seniors.
  • Must have strong computer skills, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain a U.S. DOD Secret Security Clearance.

DESIRED:

  • Proficiency using CAD software such as SolidWorks.
  • Proficiency using FEA software such as ANSYS or SolidWorks Simulation.
  • Strong technical writing skills.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Possesses and applies a working knowledge of engineering fundamentals in one or more engineering fields.
  • Candidate will have to perform in an ISO-9000 rated company in a rapidly changing and demanding atmosphere.
