Overview
Modern Technology Solutions, Inc. (MTSI) is seeking a Sr Space System Expert with deep expertise in the design, development, analysis, and operational employment of full space systems and their subcomponents. This position supports a U.S. Space Force (USSF) program office engaged in the development, maturation, testing, and transition of advanced space and space control capabilities spanning space, ground, and command-and-control (C2) domains. Work will be conducted in secure government environments supporting highly sensitive, mission-critical programs.
Responsibilities
As a Sr Space System Expert, you will provide senior-level technical leadership across system architecture development, subsystem engineering, mission design, and operational analysis. You will guide the government through concept development, technology assessments, system-level trade studies, integration planning, and mission performance evaluations. You will routinely brief senior leaders, collaborate across engineering and operational communities, and support the development of technical baselines and acquisition documentation.
Roles and Responsibilities
  • Serve as the senior technical authority on the design, development, integration, and evaluation of complete space systems and subsystems.
  • Provide expertise across multiple space operations and space-control-related disciplines, including orbitology, spacecraft navigation, sensor employment, optimization, communications, and C2.
  • Support mission design and analysis activities, including orbit trades, sensor coverage modeling, performance assessments, and resiliency evaluations.
  • Evaluate spacecraft bus and payload designs for feasibility, mission alignment, technology maturity, and integration readiness.
  • Conduct in-depth system-level trade studies considering cost, schedule, performance, risk, survivability, and operational impacts.
  • Provide technical oversight and evaluation of contractor engineering products, design reviews, verification plans, ICDs, and risk assessments.
  • Support ground, space, and C2 interface development, ensuring end-to-end system integration and mission coherence.
  • Advise the government on technology investments, prototyping strategies, and transition-to-operations pathways.
  • Prepare senior-level briefings, technical analyses, and decision-support materials using MS Office tools.
  • Represent the program office in meetings with government, contractor, military, and FFRDC stakeholders regarding space system development and mission applications.
Qualifications
  • Expert in the design, development, and evaluation of space systems and their subcomponents.
  • Expert-level knowledge in multiple space operations fields, including orbitology, navigation, sensor employment, communications, optimization, and command and control.
  • Demonstrated experience in system architecture development, mission design analysis, and integrated space-ground-C2 engineering.
  • Ability to perform and assess system-level trade studies, technical risks, and mission performance impacts.
  • Experience supporting DoD or Intelligence Community program offices in SAPF/SCIF environments.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly convey complex technical analyses to senior leadership.
Desired Requirements
  • Experience supporting ACAT I/II or highly classified special access space programs.
  • Experience with spacecraft subsystem design (e.g., GNC, RF systems, power, structural subsystems, thermal control).
  • Familiarity with DoD engineering processes, acquisition documentation, readiness assessments, and milestone reviews.
Education Requirements
  • MA/MS degree required.
  • Tradeoff: A Bachelor's degree is acceptable with 12+ years of relevant experience in comparable programs or roles.
  • The Materiel Leader may waive the MA/MS requirement based on experience and mission needs.
  • Degree should be in aerospace engineering, physics, electrical engineering, or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution.
Clearance Requirements
  • Active TOP SECRET clearance with SCI eligibility.
  • Must be willing to work within SAP environments.
  • Must maintain TS/SCI eligibility and be willing to undergo a Counter-Intelligence polygraph.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
Location/Travel Requirements
  • Full-time on-site support within secure government facilities (SAPF/SCIF).
  • Travel approximately 15-20% within CONUS, with potential OCONUS travel based on mission needs.
