Job Summary

Job Summary

Under supervision of the Animal Resources Group (ARG) Supervisor, conduct daily monitoring of life support systems, report problems directly to supervisor, and initiate emergency contact procedures when working independently. Collaborate with staff and volunteers in conducting basic duties and keep management apprised of routine activities. Perform daily animal health checks, routine and experimental feeding of animals, culture of research animals, disease and parasite checks including treatment and clean and maintain holding tanks. Schedule and conduct in-field collections of marine organisms by various means. Perform occasional non-routine laboratory work. Perform animal/plant culturing and breeding including seasonal shellfish husbandry.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • No Minimum Education required.
  • Six months to one year of relevant work experience in animal care or equivalent combination of education and training.
  • Experience conducting non-destructive sampling for analysis, (for example water sampling).
  • Experience in the behavior of water under pressure, and to work with life support piping under pressure.
  • Applied experience and ability to handle laboratory animals in a manner that avoids injury to self or animals.
  • Ability to describe and record observations, calculations, and findings clearly and accurately.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in care for Aquatic Species, water sampling, Animal Care.
  • Knowledge of biology, ecology, anatomy or physiology of a wide variety of marine life both in natural and artificial habitats.
  • Skills to culture, acquire, and prepare food for regular feeding, and to maintain live animals or plants.
  • Skill to read and use various gauges, meters, calipers, temperature sensors, and using a computer to record notes, measurements, and workload data.
  • Skills to communicate orally and in writing within all levels of the organization including electronic communications.
  • Skills to maintain a clean environment or healthy life support systems for research and display of plants or animals.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
