The North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences (NC TraCS) Institute at
UNC-CH is one of the medical research institutions working together as a national consortium to improve the way biomedical research is conducted across the country. The consortium, funded through the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (
CTSA), shares a common vision to reduce the time it takes for laboratory discoveries to become treatments for patients, and to engage communities in clinical research efforts. The Center for Clinical and Translational Research (
CTRC) is a program of the TraCS Institute within the home of the
UNC School of Medicine. The
CTRC provides both inpatient and outpatient clinical services to support a wide variety of research studies involving human subjects with an array of investigators representing the Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, Nursing and others. |
| Position Summary |

The primary purpose of this Registered Nurse (RN) position is to provide specialized, professional nursing services for participants enrolled in clinical research studies conducted primarily in ambulatory settings. The RN delivers high quality care to both healthy volunteers and individuals with a wide range of medical conditions, in accordance with federal regulations, Good Clinical Practice (
GCP), and institutional policies. The RN supports study implementation across multiple care environments, including the NC TraCS Clinical and Translational Research Center (
CTRC),
UNC Medical Center, and designated research locations across the
UNC campus. The role ensures participant safety, supports protocol integrity, and promotes accurate data collection while maintaining care that is safe, timely, effective, equitable, compassionate, and patient centered.
Job Responsibilities: Care requirements are determined by the participant's clinical condition, the research protocol, and the nature and timing of study procedures. Responsibilities include providing individualized nursing care to adult and pediatric research participants; performing protocol specified clinical activities; supporting investigational product administration and participant monitoring; documenting care in accordance with regulatory and institutional standards; and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe and effective study conduct. The RN also contributes to unit operations through participation in charge nurse rotations, supports continuous quality improvement efforts, and assists with onboarding and training of staff and research personnel as appropriate. |
| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina. |
| Management Preferences |
- Clinical Expertise: Strong nursing knowledge with experience in pediatrics, medical surgical care, clinical research, IV/phlebotomy, and biotherapy or investigational medications; BLS required.
- Effective Communication & Teamwork: Ability to communicate clearly and work diplomatically with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Professionalism & Flexibility: Positive, adaptable, and supportive team member who contributes to a collaborative work environment.
- Organization & Attention to Detail: Skilled at prioritizing multiple tasks and maintaining accuracy while working independently or within a team.
- Technical Proficiency: Experience with Epic or similar EMR systems and strong skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

- Valid NC driver's license.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

| Special Physical/Mental Requirements |
- Visual attention and mental concentration at all times, with or without accommodation, is required in this capacity due to the clinical nature of the work.
- Ability to remain in front of a computer for extended periods of time and the ability to move 30 pounds, with or without accommodation.
- Ability to travel distances within the hospital, on campus, and to offsite locations for research on location functions, with or without accommodation.

** ELIGIBILITY FOR SIGN-ON BONUS
Qualified applicants must be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:
A newly hired permanent full-time or permanent part-time (more than 20 hours a week) employee is eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and less than 40 hours per week).
An employee is not eligible for a sign-on bonus if:
1. The employee has held a SHRA position in North Carolina State government, including the judicial system, or the University of North Carolina system within the last 12 months (the employee shall remain ineligible for 12 months from the separation date);
2. The employee has previously received a sign-on bonus from any North Carolina State agency or university; or
3. UNC-CH has paid any contract placement or recruitment fees.
