Iowa KidSight Program

Title: Iowa KidSight Office Assistant (UI Student Position)

Hours: Flexible, 8-12 hours/week, typically between 8 a.m. & 5 p.m., M-F

Pay: $13.00/hour

Basic Function and Responsibility:

Supports the daily operations of the Iowa KidSight office by assisting with the in-processing of vision screening results, follow-up processes, and routine office operations.

Contribute to a professional and positive team environment. Demonstrate initiative and responsibility to manage projects and tasks independently.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Receive, examine, and prepare in-coming vision screenings for interpretation. Record receipt of screening forms and images. Review, verify, and rectify inaccuracies on screening forms.

Review work of Lions Club Volunteers for conformance to established guidelines of Iowa KidSight and make note of ways to improve or streamline processes.

Assist in compiling and composing screening results for parents, screening sites, Lions Club Contacts, Lions Club Supervisors, parents, and collaborative partners.

Compile prepare, and print appropriate referral packets and save retake forms.

Assist with follow-up duties which may include initiating telephone calls, texts, emails, faxes, and routine written correspondence to (eye and childcare) providers and/or parents of children referred for possible vision problems to ensure there are no obstacles in receiving follow-up care, and documenting these actions in a Microsoft Access database, including information from the Evaluation Sheets received.

Assist in maintaining long-term records of screenings and follow-up material.

May assist in creating items for display, promotion, publication, or educational use.

Screen children who present to the Program office and serve as back-up for local screening activities.

Assist staff with the online training processes.

Supervision Received:

From the Program Manager, functional supervision received from the Operations Specialist or the Follow-Up Coordinator.

Supervision Exercised:

Supervision may be exercised over Program Volunteers or new UI Student Staff performing overlapping duties.

Required Qualifications:



  1. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  2. Excellent oral and written English communication skills are necessary along with the ability to communicate effectively with staff, Program collaborators, and the public.
  3. Demonstrated proficiency in communicating and working with the public.
  4. Experience in an office setting.
  5. Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office applications and Internet search engines.
  6. A valid driver's license.
  7. The ability to lift 50 pounds as necessary.



Desired Qualifications:

Social media management experience. Experience in videography. Prior experience working in an optometry or ophthalmology clinic.
