Job Summary

The Planning Intern will support the Planning & Development Department in various tasks related to zoning and community development. The intern will work closely with experienced planning and zoning professionals to gain practical experience and contribute to ongoing projects.


Job Duties

Research, Data Collection & Analysis:

  • Conduct research on best practices in planning, zoning regulations, and sustainable development.
  • Provide literature reviews and summarize findings of specific projects
  • Collect and organize data related to land use, zoning, demographics, and environmental factors
  • Analyze data and create reports and visuals to support planning projects
  • Assist in creating maps and utilizing GIS systems for spatial analysis
Zoning & Sign Code reviews
  • Review project applications to evaluate whether projects conform with the Municipal Code
  • Process permits for common project requests
Planning Projects
  • Support the planning team in plan development and implementation
  • Attend community meetings and workshops as part of the planning process
  • Assist in gathering public input and feedback for planning projects
Communications
  • Document project progress (taking digital photos) for major public and private developments
  • Draft content for Village e-newsletters regarding ongoing projects
Administrative Support
  • Perform general office tasks, including answering phones, responding to emails, answering walk-in questions and scheduling meetings
  • Scan and file permits, project plans, and reports
  • Coordinate public mailings for legal notices and planning
  • All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. A student enrolled in or accepted into a degree program in Public Administration, Urban Planning, Geography, Urban & Regional studies, Environmental studies or a related field.
  2. A valid driver's license or ability to obtain one.

Supplemental Information

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area within a Village department, which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following tasks:

  1. Knowledge of general principles and methodology of urban planning and zoning.
  2. Knowledge of and ability to use GIS applications to generate maps and modify existing files and databases.
  3. Knowledge of principles and practices of research and data collection.
  4. Knowledge of effective writing techniques.
  5. Statistical, algebraic or geometric knowledge and ability to apply such knowledge in practical situations.
  6. Knowledge of computer programs and applications, which may include Microsoft Office, Adobe, database management and Internet applications.
  7. Oral communication and interpersonal skills to explain rules and procedures clearly to the public.
  8. Ability to work on several projects or issues simultaneously.
  9. Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, governmental regulations and legal documents.
  10. Ability to write reports, memos and business correspondence using proper spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  11. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  12. Ability to establish and maintain positive, professional working relationships with co-workers and supervisors.
  13. Ability to work with the public in a friendly, tactful manner.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Position requires extreme accuracy and prolonged sitting in the performance of daily duties and frequent repetitive keyboarding motion for preparing reports and other documents. The position also requires walking and some standing and lifting of boxes. Must be able to travel occasionally as needed.

The equipment required to be used for this position includes a phone system,desktop computer,copymachine,faxmachine, andscanner.
