Traffic Control & Engineering is seeking a candidate to fill the position of Assistant Transportation Specialist (ATS) to serve in the Manhattan Borough Engineering unit. Under direct supervision, the Assistant Transportation Specialist assists in the preparation of transportation and traffic studies and supports projects related to citywide traffic programs. The ATS engages in field investigations and surveys to evaluate traffic conditions, safety, visibility, access, circulation, crash patterns, traffic volumes, and pedestrian and vehicular operations. The selected candidate assists in studies related to traffic signal installations, signal timing modifications, pavement markings, signage, loading zones, and other traffic control devices. Responsibilities include reviewing accident reports, observing accident locations, analyzing traffic flow patterns, and assisting in evaluating operational changes such as the conversion of two-way streets to one-way operations. The ATS may recommend methods to improve traffic safety and reduce congestion and crashes, including temporary routing or detours where appropriate. The Assistant Transportation Specialist prepares detailed reports, diagrams, and sketches documenting field conditions and study findings. The position assists in the preparation of work orders and may monitor the installation, modification, or removal of traffic control devices to ensure compliance with established standards and specifications. Additionally, the ATS assists higher-level staff in analyzing traffic volume counts and evaluating the operational performance of street and transportation facilities. The office draws on the expertise and talents of engineers, sign designers, planners, inspectors, IT experts, analysts, and others to help the agency achieve Vision Zero and other city goals.

Minimum Qualifications 1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, planning or mathematics or one of the physical sciences; or
2. High school diploma or its educational equivalent and 4 years of full-time experience performing technical work on traffic programs and citywide transportation studies; or
3. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above.
