PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of SAS course or knowledge of SAS software

RESPONSIBILITIES: Health Research, Inc. is seeking an Hourly Intern II to work within the Bureau of Occupational Health and Injury Prevention (BOHIP), Center for Environmental Health, the New York State Department of Health (DOH). BOHIP is the home of the New York Violent Death Reporting System (NYVDRS) and epidemiological research and policy analysis relating to injury, death, heavy metals and occupational health.

The data and statistics that BOHIP collects and reports on are presented to the public via the DOH webpage for the Bureau. This webpage has not been updated in several years and with new data comes the need to present the most current leading causes of injury and injury death for stakeholders to inform their programs and health behaviors.

Additionally, the NYVDRS collects and integrates data from death certificates, medical examiner and coroner reports, and law enforcement records to provide comprehensive information on homicides, suicides and other violent deaths in New York State. The surveillance statistics currently displayed on the NYVDRS webpage require updating to reflect newly finalized data.

The update of these data will ensure not only that the public will have access to the most current data relating to injury in New York State, but external programs and initiatives may also utilize the most current data to inform and better understand their community programming to further reduce injury and violence.

The Hourly Intern II will assist with analyzing data from internal and external sources to generate updated statistics for public reporting. The Hourly Intern II will gain hands-on experience working with large datasets using SAS and other software, strengthening their data management and analysis skills. Specific tasks will include, but not limited to cleaning and preparing datasets, calculating injury and death statistics, producing summary tables and figures, and ensuring the accuracy of results for inclusion on Bureau of Occupational Health and Injury Prevention's (BOHIP) website. Once core deliverables are met, the Hourly Intern II will have the opportunity to support additional injury and violence surveillance topics that may require updates or enhancement on BOHIP webpages.
