Organizational Overview

Brookhaven National Laboratory's Guest Services Division plays a vital role in enabling the Laboratory's world-class scientific mission by providing comprehensive, high-quality services to its departments, divisions, guests, users, and visiting researchers. Position Description

Guest Services is seeking an Auto-Truck Mechanic to join their team. Under minimum supervision performs required repairs, maintenance, servicing, and incidental operation of gasoline, diesel engine, or propane driven vehicles such as automobiles, trucks, trailers, and material handling equipment. Performs all duties associated with the removal and installation of two-way radios, back-up sensing devices, upholstery repair, D/C power invertors, back-up cameras, and remote alarms. Performs limited welding, brazing and painting, and other body and fender repair work to maintain vehicles in operating order. Use and maintain all hand and portable tools, shop machines, and equipment necessary to perform assigned work.

This position reports to the Guest Services Division Motor Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor.

The hours of operation are Monday-Friday 7:00am to 3:30pm.

Essential Duties

Inspection and Diagnosis

  • Inspecting vehicles to identify mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic issues
  • Using diagnostic tools and computer software to troubleshoot engine and system problems
  • Performing routine vehicle inspection and safety checks
  • Test-driving vehicles to identify performance issues

Repair and Maintenance

  • Repairing or replacing engines, transmissions, brakes, steering systems, and suspension
  • Servicing diesel and gasoline engines
  • Changing oil, filters, belts, and fluids
  • Repairing exhaust systems and fuel systems
  • Fixing electrical systems, wiring, and lighting

Preventive Maintenance

  • Performing scheduled maintenance to prevent breakdowns

Documentation and Reporting

  • Keeping accurate records of repairs and maintenance performed
  • Explaining mechanical issues and repair recommendations to supervisors

Safety and Compliance

  • Following workplace safety procedures
  • Ensuring vehicles meet state and federal safety regulations
  • Maintaining clean and organized work areas

Customer and Team Interaction

  • Communicating with fleet supervisors, drivers, and customers
  • Working with other mechanics and shop staff

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience with light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles
  • Air conditioning recovery and recycle license
  • Ability to perform diagnostics and PM servicing to Lab vehicles including engine systems, transmission, suspension, brakes, 12 volt wiring systems, computer systems, ABS systems, and tire replacement
  • Familiarity with installation and repair of special equipment such as hydraulic lift gates, interior storage, roof racks, toolboxes, and strobe lights
  • The ability to work 8-hourshifts and extended hours if necessary
  • The ability to perform road calls in all weather conditions on site at BNL
  • Must possess a valid NYS Class A driver's license with tow endorsement
  • Possess good written and verbal communication skills, including:
    • Ability to follow written instruction, procedures, work orders, and similar documents
    • Ability to sufficiently write/complete work orders and other required documents
    • Ability to communicate verbally with customers, fellow workers and supervisors
  • Must have a telephone and provide the number to BNL for callout and contact purposes
  • The ability to complete all the requirements of the BNL Job Training Assessments (JTA)

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of hybrid electric vehicles
  • CDL endorsements such as tanker, hazmat, or the ability to obtain and maintain the same as may be required
  • Computer literate with moderate experience in Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Excel and Word
  • Experience with Snap On, Mac and diagnostic equipment.

Environmental, Health, and Safety Considerations:

Must meet the medical requirements of BNL's Job Medical Assessment Form, including but not limited to:

  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Continuous walking/standing
  • Have good physical coordination & balance
  • Frequent bending, twisting and crawling
  • Physically demanding work
  • Ability to work in heights >5 feet
  • Have good near & distance vision
  • Driving lab vehicle, truck & heavy equipment
  • Ability to work outdoors in cold and hot conditions
  • Powered hand tools/hand vibration
  • Ability to work around moving machinery
  • Ability to wear proper PPE such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and hearing protection

Other Information:

The successful applicant will be required to join IBEW Local 2230 and maintain membership within 30 days of their start date.
