Description

The Physical Therapist Assistant Lab Instructor supervises and teaches students as they practice hands-on clinical skills required for safe entry-level PTA practice.


Description of Essential Functions (critical tasks)

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Assist with teaching psychomotor techniquessuch as therapeutic exercises, transfers, gait training, andmodalities, using proper body mechanics and safety protocols on peers or mannequins.
  2. Circulate through lab stations to provide real- time feedback, correct errors, ensure patient-centered communication, and promote professional behaviors during paired or group skill practice sessions.
  3. Assist with the setup of equipment, supplies, and stations for sessions; inventory materials; and ensure a safe, functional space compliant with accreditation and infection control guidelines
  4. Proctor skill checks, practical exams, and remediation sessions, evaluating performance against program standards and documenting results for programmatic completion.
  5. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Specific Functional Job Requirements

Education Requirements:

  • Minimum Associate in Applied Science, Bachelor's preferred. Must have a valid Physical Therapist or Physical Therapist Assistant License from any state. Must be highly familiar with IL practice act.
    Must have at least one year of full-time post-licensure clinical experience

Experience Requirements:

Knowledge:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of therapy interventions such as therapeutic exercises, transfers, gait training, and modalities

    Familiarity with evidence-based practice principles in physical therapy in Illinois

    Strong understanding of the APTA standards of Ethical Conduct for the PTA and the PTA scope of practice


Skills:
  1. Foster a supportive environment by encouraging self-discovery, active listening, and positive reinforcement to boost confidence and professional behaviors.
  2. Communicate effectively, both verbally and through hands-on demonstration, to ensure student success.
  3. Guide students through hands-on learning by modeling safe, evidence-based clinical techniques and promoting critical thinking during skill practice.
  4. Adapt teaching strategies to meet diverse learning styles, ensuring all students can engage, perform, and build competency in clinical skills.
  5. Maintain an organized and efficient lab environment by preparing equipment, monitoring safety, and supporting smooth skill progression through class sessions.
