The primary location for this position is the Concord, NC Office; however, other Duke Energy locations in the Carolinas will be considered as available.

Position Summary

Senior Project Manager (Sr PM) position under general direction of Energy Services Director of Design. The Sr PM position is responsible for management, or assisting management, of all phases of project design, as well as leadership and management of Project Managers reporting to the Sr PM. These responsibilities include but are not limited to scope development, schedule, cost estimating, design quality, integrated reliability, environmental, safety, communications, and contractor and vendor management. In addition, this position is highly involved in the budgeting of programs and projects within the Energy Services Design portfolio. This position will have direct reports consisting of Project Managers and/or other resources such as design assistants, CAD operators, administrative support staff and contingent workers.

The position is accountable for the design and development of a portfolio of projects with moderate to high levels of risk, typically involving mature technology, and include moderate to high levels of operational complexity. Sr PM's are accountable to various stakeholders that include customers, department level personnel in addition to Senior Management, and possibly the Board of Directors and External Agencies. Sr PM's may be assigned to projects with specific risk-informed requirements based on specific experience and skill sets.

Sr PM's serve as unifying agent providing leadership, decision making, management, guidance, direction, coordination, and control of overall projects in accordance with established policies, procedures, systems, and requirements of the Company. The Sr PM will serve to develop and support management in advancing standardization of Energy Services Operations Team practices, policies, procedures, and tools.

This is a leadership position and minimum qualifications must be met to be placed within this position. Progression to this level is based on experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, and restricted on the basis of Business Unit needs to manage the portfolio.

Responsibilities

Contractor & Vendor Management

Full understanding of Duke contractor procurement policies, negotiate contract terms and pricing, utilize standard Energy Service contract templates and forms. Prepare contracts ensuring proper reviews including any required leadership, legal, and compliance are completed. Detailed understanding to administer contracts per scope of work and deliverables as specified. Initiate and coordinate the issuance of Purchase Orders. Ensure invoices are approved and paid per contract terms. Prepare and execute contract Change Orders in a timely manner. Save contract documents in designated shared location as directed. Participate in construction kickoff meetings ensuring that scope, site conditions, schedule, and Duke/ customer expectations are fully understood. Provide contractors feedback on deficiencies and ensure that issues and resolution are documented and corrected per contract requirements. Ensure that all final contract documentation is archived.

Planning

Advanced understanding to lead design peer reviews. Coordinate with Business Development, Project Delivery, Operations, Structuring, and Business Support teams as required. Recognize and secure expertise required to support successful project delivery. Ensure the design is constructable and will be reliable. Interconnection coordination as required, ensure Customer CDAs are in place.

Design Development & Other

Advanced understanding of electrical infrastructure and distributed generation design processes. Can independently manage complex or high-risk projects, assuming single point of accountability of all phases of analysis and design. Proactively optimize and develop business processes to highlight the technical, operational, and financial feasibility of proposed projects. Develop project and business case presentations and present to senior management and project sponsors. Ensure that all licenses and permits are acquired before site mobilization. Recognize potential scope, schedule, or financial risk and implement strategies to mitigate before issues arise. Develop agendas and lead project development and peer review meetings with stakeholders (internal and external). Work with the Delivery and Operations teams to resolve constructability issues and to develop quality installations in a cost-effective manner. Independently develop pricing models and prepare contract documents for proposals. Exercise disciplined approach to manage project documentation in appropriate storage locations (Procore, SharePoint, etc.). Develop and document standard operating procedures and lead project commissioning to ensure adherence to procedures.

Safety

Advanced experience to establish and maintain a strong safety culture within the working team. Demonstrate advanced leadership skills and collaborate with safety resources by championing the Duke Energy Safety First culture. Follow companywide guidance to achieve the goal of "no reportable accidents (injuries or vehicle)", reporting all near misses observed or knowledgeable of. Lead safety investigations, prepare incident safety reports and implement corrective actions. Recognize and assign safety improvement initiatives. Possess a good understanding of all Duke Energy Safety Rules and Procedures, and the Energy Services Safety Plan. Lead by example with compliance to PPE requirements and hold others accountable to these requirements as outlined in the Duke Energy Safety Guidance. Demonstrate active caring by teaching and supporting others in following safe work practices. Develop and follow Individual Safety Plan (ISP) by obtaining/maintaining required safety training and certifications as the business and project assignments require (i.e., 40-hour EM385-1, OSHA30, OSHA10, CPR Certification, First Aid Certification, and advanced safety training, etc.). Willingness to contribute to the Energy Services Safety Plan by encouraging adherence to the policy and vocalizing improvements or concerns. Possess leadership acumen to recognize and implement safety standdowns as needed. Effectively communicate safety requirements that result in project safety compliance. Work with others to develop and implement project safety plans. Ensure Pre-Job Briefs are being conducted every day and with any change in scope, personnel, or site conditions.

Project Schedule

Work with Delivery and Operations to analyze the project scope and identify milestones. Participate in the development of project schedules accounting for equipment and material delivery and the duration of all tasks. Review schedules with all PMs to ensure delivery schedules are up to date and that projects are on plan. Utilize the project schedule in customer and contractor design meetings. Conduct schedule reviews with contractors, vendors, and customers. Report any major change in the schedule to management including any mitigating measures that are being attempted, impact to the project delivery and financials.

Project Financials

Exceptional understanding of project financials and aptitude to completely understand all budgetary implications of equipment, material, and labor estimates. Timely and highly accurate reporting of overall project budget throughout the design stage. Expert experience and ability to recognize and mitigate risks associated with assigned projects. Identify and promptly report project financial upsides and downsides. Proficient ability to strengthen and enrich project financials with highly effective organizational and efficiency skills. Collaborate with Delivery and Operations on cost analysis of completed projects to assess alignment with budget.

Leadership

Advanced leadership, management and coordination skills with external/internal customers and vendors/ contractors. Superior ability to communicate customer needs to the entire team ensuring project alignment. Excellent technical aptitude, leadership experience and ability to utilize team and SMEs to achieve positive results. Superior leadership skills to provide oversight and interactions with all internal/external team members. Developing and mentoring other teammates, potentially with direct oversight, to enhance team growth. Role will include managerial responsibilities with direct reports.

Required/Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree AND seven (7) years related work experience

  • In lieu of Bachelors degree(s) and experience listed above, High School/GED AND 11 years related work experience

Desired Qualifications
  • Associates degree in Industrial Maintenance Technology

  • In addition to desired degree, 20 years related work experience

  • 6 sigma in Lean Six Sigma methodologies

Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong background in electrical, gas, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems including design, installation, and operation of those systems

  • Experience with development and execution of system improvement planning with measurement through KPIs

  • Prior leadership experience in construction, operation, and maintenance of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems

  • Experience in vendor and contractor management including contract negotiations, safety compliance, scope, schedule, quality, and cost definition, execution, and oversight

  • Employee management, development, and oversight

Working Conditions
  • Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location

  • Position requires site visits, customer contact, and response for commissioning and other onsite activities.

Specific Requirements
  • 4 year degree and 7+ years of prior work-related experience or 20+ years in electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems in lieu of a degree
