Job Duties
The Senior Associate Director has administrative responsibility for monitoring the policies and procedures of the University student conduct system and for administering the Student Code of Conduct. The Senior Associate Director will aid the Associate Dean of Students/Director of OSRR in the management of the office's day-to-day operations, oversee organizational misconduct, and aid in the adjudication of Title IX cases.

Specific Responsibilities:
The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities oversees the administration and supervision of the University student conduct system with the authority to formulate and carry out institutional policy. To that end, the Senior Associate Director:
Student Organization Conduct (30%)

  • Oversees organizational misconduct processes
  • Lead student organization investigations and adjudication of allegations of violations of ECU policies, including hazing, drugs, alcohol, physical violence, and disruptive conduct;
  • Track and monitor interim measures, and communicate with witnesses, chapter leadership, and complainants;
  • Manage and oversee large-scale, complex investigations involving multiple witnesses or respondents;
  • Serve as a liaison to the Office for Student Engagement regarding student organization conduct;
  • Leads Associate Director in investigating and adjudicating cases involving fraternities and sororities, club sports, and student organizations;
  • Produce investigative reports and findings, communicate with national/international headquarters and local advisors regarding student organization conduct, and track sanctions and communication in the Maxient database;


Investigation & Adjudication of Conduct Cases, and Case Management (35%)

  • Acts as an administrative hearing officer, which includes addressing behavioral concerns, counseling students on conduct matters, enacting appropriate sanctions or referring to the ECU Conduct Board, and monitoring sanctions;
  • Reviews reports determining the nature and scope of the infraction and Investigates, adjudicates, and manages all aspects of individual cases (in addition to student organization cases) involving violations of ECU policies, such as drugs, alcohol, physical violence, theft, vandalism, and academic integrity;
  • Prepares appeal packets for appropriate appellate officer;
  • Initiates and maintains conduct correspondence sent to students involved in disciplinary infractions, their parents, and attorneys;
  • Communicates with law enforcement regarding students referred to OSRR;
  • Writes investigative reports for student organization investigations and cases being referred to the ECU Student Conduct Board;
  • Assists in the maintenance of accurate conduct records, and authorizes appropriate access to student records in accordance with university policies, and state and federal laws;
  • Serve as a Hearing Advisor for cases involving suspension or expulsion;
  • Serve as Hearing Advisor for cases referred to the ECU Student Conduct Board, Title IX Hearing Board, or Academic Integrity Board, including processing cases, assessing charges, sending correspondence, scheduling hearings and facilitating hearings, and working with attorneys;

Supervision and Training (20%)

  • Provides supervision to two assistant director(s) and indirectly advises the Student Conduct Board;
  • Provides feedback and professional opportunities for staff and monitors the assistant director's caseload and work product;
  • Trains and onboards new and existing staff on UNC and ECU policies and procedures related to student conduct;
  • Trains staff on best practices related to investigating and adjudicating individual and student organizational conduct, serving as a hearing advisor, due process, and training the student conduct board on individual, organization, and academic integrity cases;
  • Leads the assistant directors in developing a comprehensive Student Conduct Board training program that uses Canvas and in-person meetings;

Leadership and Planning (10%)

  • Provides leadership and assists with the day-to-day operations of the OSRR;
  • Serves in leadership capacity in the absence of the associate dean of students/director, including making decisions regarding interim action and attendance in recurring University committees;
  • Assists associate dean of students/director in developing, implementing, and collecting data related to OSRR's assessment and strategic operations plan;
  • Assists in using assessment data to facilitate, streamline, and improve operations across all functional areas of the office;
  • Conducts periodic reviews of the Student Conduct Process; chairs Student Conduct Process Review Committee;
  • Oversees, maintains, and leads periodic revisions to OSRR's Standard Operating Procedures, Sanction Recommendations Guidelines, and Student Organization Conduct Handbook;

Other (5%)

  • Participates in special projects and serves on various University committees as assigned by the associate dean of students/director;
  • Educates the University community about the campus conduct process through presentations and participation in various programs, classes, faculty and staff, and residence halls.
  • Serves as a liaison with the Greenville community and to other on-campus departments;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Master's Degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel, Counseling, or related field.
  • Minimum of five years of experience at the post-secondary level
  • A demonstrated understanding of student development and counseling theories and the ability to apply theory in practice in a university setting is necessary.
  • An understanding and experience working with cases involving Title IX and organizational misconduct.
  • Demonstrated experience working with large-scale and complex investigations involving hazing, drug distribution, alcohol and physical assaults.
  • Knowledge of legal issues in higher education.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience interacting with the public, attorneys, parents, students, staff, and faculty.
  • Knowledge of federal laws related to Clery, Hazing, Title IX, and VAWA.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Minimum of five years of experience in student conduct administration or closely related field.
  • An ability to manage and investigate cases involving individuals, fraternities and sororities, club and intramural sports teams, student organizations, and athletics.
  • Excellent problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills, organizational and administrative skills, written/verbal/interpersonal communications skills, team-building skills.
  • Ability to build positive and effective relationships across the campus and community.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, manage multiple competing priorities, and provide exemplary customer service.
  • Completion of training or continuing education through the ASCA Gehring Training Institute, Association of Student Conduct Administration (ASCA), the SUNY Student Conduct Institute (SSCI), Hazing Prevention Certification through Campuspeak, Behavioral Intervention or Threat Assessment training, or a related training or continuing education.
  • Experience working with Maxient or a student conduct database system.
  • Familiarity with UNC system policies such as 700.4.1, 700.4.1.1, 700.4.4., and NC General Statutes * 116-40.11.
