Typical Duties:
- Performs mowing, trimming and wood cutting services along with grounds, buildings, facilities and trails inspection, maintenance and repairs; may include but not limited to, trash clean up, painting, carpentry, sign installation, tree and shrub planting, grading ruts and holes and other landscape care.
- Performs general custodial work; includes but not limited to cleaning, sweeping and mopping restroom facilities and shelters, picnic tables, fire pits.
- Operates and maintains machinery and equipment, primarily chain saws and a utility tractor with mower, loader and other attachments, and may include minor electrical, plumbing and heating systems maintenance and repairs.
- Cuts, transports and stocks firewood.
- Performs building or facility construction and installation.
- Accesses facility reservations and emails on computer, as needed and assigned.
- Assists the public with reservations, directions, general aid and information on park regulations, facilities and services.
- Enforces park rules, policies and regulations.
- Keeps Attendant, Parks Foreman and Parks Supervisor informed of problems, incidents and needs, and makes recommendations regarding improvements or maintenance.
- Assists and monitors the work of camp hosts, volunteers and other non-staff workers, including inmate laborers.
- Regular attendance and punctuality required.
- Performs related duties as may be required or assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated safe and proficient operation of chain saws and utility tractors, including loader and mower use.
- Knowledge of power equipment, light machinery, tools and cleaning materials and their use.
- Knowledge of electrical, plumbing and heating systems and equipment.
- Knowledge of safety related to electricity, cleaning chemicals, power equipment and general maintenance work.
- Knowledge and familiarity with assigned county park.
- Knowledge of park administration policies, procedures, rules, laws and regulations and ability to relate same to the public and other park staff, and to effectively enforce same.
- Basic carpentry and handyman knowledge.
- Basic computer skills required to use email and access reservation software when necessary.
- Ability to follow directions, drawings, plans or prints to carry out a project.
- Ability to maintain a friendly disposition to the public and effective working relationships with staff, work crews and contractors, including the handling of upset or hostile individuals in a professional manner.
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out instructions and work mostly independently with minimal supervision.
- Must meet requirements of Dodge County Driver Qualification Policy.
Working Conditions: Works primarily at one assigned site, but may be assigned to various park sites, based on project needs. Works primarily outdoors; may be subject to temperature extremes, windy and wet weather. Works in varied terrain and vegetation; wooded areas, fields, steep topography, wet areas. Inclement weather work may be done under shelters or in shop with slight protection from the weather. May be exposed to periodic intense noise. May be exposed to hazards such as weather, mechanical, electrical, chemicals and heights. May need to effectively deal with upset or hostile individuals or those violating park rules. Flexible work hours based on individual park needs, conditions and usage, but must be available to work primarily during the weekdays when park usage is lowest. High School (required)
Experience
High school diploma or GED equivalent and minimum of one (1) years general grounds, building and equipment operation and maintenance with emphasis on proficient and safe use of chain saw and utility tractor/mower/loader use, preferably in a park or campground setting. Equivalent combination of education and experience which provides necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. (preferred)
