GENERAL SUMMARY: Provides daily management and oversight of technical activities within the Histology department, including embedding, microtomy, immunohistochemistry, special stains, and tissue processing. Provides technical expertise, decision making, and problem-solving skills with in-depth knowledge of histologic techniques. Conducts instrument maintenance, leads and trains staff, conducts quality assurance reviews, and maintains strict adherence to all quality and regulatory standards. PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values. 2. *Participates in annual review of policy and procedures; enforces established performance standards and procedural protocols, ensuring proficiency and competency; implements, monitors and enforces safety policies and procedures. 3. *Monitors and enforces compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements concerning anatomic laboratory safety and is responsible for fostering a positive safety culture and managing incident investigations to ensure a safe working environment. 4. *Develops, updates and maintains a procedure manual for the department and ensures it is current and compliant with the College of American Pathologists (CAP) guidelines, as well as any other associated governing body. 5. *Ensures all activities are performed and documented according to established standard operating procedures (SOPs). 6. Prepares for and participates in internal and external audits and inspections by regulatory bodies such as CAP, Clinical laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), and others. 7. *Responsible for personnel activities including interviewing, hiring, onboarding, training and competency assessments. Including technical instruction and training on techniques, instrumentation, and organization of work. 8. Provides coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback, conducting timely performance reviews and disciplinary actions when necessary. 9. *Ensures that staff are properly trained and maintain competency in all relevant procedures. 10. *Plans, assigns, and schedules department staff to ensure efficient workflow and to meet turnaround time goals. 11. Works closely with staff members and other departments to ensure specimens are turned out in a timely manner. 12. Performs quality control and quality assurance on instrumentation and reagents used for testing. 13. *Examines slides under a microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements. Technical and/or stain quality abnormalities are investigated for further study and resolution. 14. *Plans, organizes, and completes evaluations and validations for new procedures and instrumentation. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor of science degree in a laboratory science or related field required. Three (3) years of experience in the histology laboratory required. Minimum of one (1) year leadership experience is preferred. OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS: Current applicable ASCP certification (Histotechnician (HT), Histotechnologist (HTL), Cytopathology (CT), Pathologists Assistants (PA) required. Member in good standing with the American Society of Clinical Pathology required. Maintains 12 CEUs each year. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to distinguish and discriminate between colors. | |
