DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies serves as a catalyst for positive change by advancing global access, equity, and social and economic mobility through educational enrichment across the lifespan. As a fully self-supporting division under UC San Diego Academic Affairs, Extended Studies operates year-round (12 months of active instruction) with a budget of $50 million annually. A team of 260 academic and staff employees and more than 1,200 instructors fulfill the mission of delivering exceptional educational experiences and services that reflect our standing as part of a top-tier globally renowned public research University. Extended Studies operates in 200,000 square feet of managed space, including a headquarters building with classrooms, training spaces and key administrative offices adjacent to the UC San Diego campus, as well as off-campus classroom facilities in nearby University City. The division maintains a robust online learning platform, operating 24/7 with webcasting and video-conferencing capabilities, while also maintaining a strong web presence with e-commerce operating 24/7. There are over 90,000 enrollment transactions annually, supported by a robust network of representatives, agents, and students. Focused on community engagement and enrichment, the division operates two television stations, UCTV and UCSD-TV, and a variety of public lecture programs, while staying active in federal, state, local, and private research and technical assistance programs and activities. Extended Studies is also responsible for the management and financial, operational, and programming oversight of UC San Diego Park & Market, a 66,000-square-foot, four-story, multi-purpose office building located in the East Village neighborhood of downtown San Diego. Park & Market supports and hosts a wide variety of civic, community, corporate, and campus events, meetings, conferences, and programs. POSITION OVERVIEW Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced business development professional to perform the full range of sales activities to identify, develop, and nurture leads that generate training and executive education opportunities for the Division of Extended Studies (DES). Applies a full understanding of professional and continuing education markets, industry practices, and university policies and procedures to resolve a wide range of issues in support of revenue growth and strategic partnerships. This position leverages specialized knowledge of non-degree professional programs, corporate learning and development, and executive education, together with professional credibility, to drive adoption of DES corporate and custom education offerings. The portfolio includes short courses, certificates, tailored executive programs, and other contract training solutions designed to address workforce and organizational needs in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors. The position is responsible for building and managing a robust pipeline of qualified leads and closing sales that generate revenue for DES. The primary purpose of this position is program promotion and revenue generation through consultative program sales. The role proactively identifies opportunities with a wide range of stakeholders, assessing fit and readiness for customized or cohort-based educational solutions. The position targets prospective clients, corporations, public agencies, nonprofits, and other organizations domestically and internationally, and initiates outreach, relationship-building, and sales activities tailored to specific industry and sector needs. The position conducts discovery meetings with potential clients and informs them about DES solutions to senior decision makers, including HR and talent leaders, business unit heads, and executives, clearly articulating learning outcomes, business impact, and return on investment. It is responsible for external-facing promotion of DES corporate and custom programs, partnering with marketing and communications colleagues to shape and deploy sales collateral, digital campaigns, and promotional content (web, social media, email, events, and presentations). The position represents DES in discussions with a wide variety of community and industry groups and serves as an ambassador for the Division's broader portfolio of programs. This position regularly engages with senior-level leaders such as chief human resources officers, learning and development executives, business line leaders, and organizational partners, as well as alumni and past corporate clients. The role develops and delivers persuasive presentations that position DES as a strategic learning partner, and cross-promotes other DES initiatives where appropriate. The position responds to product and program inquiries, explains available delivery modalities and learning technologies, and negotiates pricing, scope of work, and contract terms in alignment with DES policies and financial targets. This position collaborates with academic program directors, faculty, and instructional teams to shape customized education solutions for corporate and government clients, aligning learning objectives, curriculum, format, and assessment with client needs and DES quality standards. The role participates in the design of program structures, recommends instructors, advises on delivery modality and location, and supports follow-up evaluation and ongoing client relationship management to encourage repeat and expanded engagements. The Assistant Director provides work direction to corporate education support staff and student employees and may oversee vendors or contracted partners supporting program delivery. The Assistant Director supports the Director with special assignments, reporting, and administrative functions, ensuring that business development and program implementation activities are executed on time and in accordance with DES strategic priorities. Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $71,600 - $127,400 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%) Hourly Equivalent: $34.29 - $61.02 Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
