Job Summary

The Assistant Director supports the overall success of students admitted into FIU's STEP pathways. This role develops, implements, and evaluates initiatives that promote student retention, progression, and timely graduation. They will work directly with a caseload of FTIC students admitted through General Supported Transition to Excellence Pathway (General STEP). The Assistant Director provides coaching and targeted outreach to support student success, monitors enrollment and academic milestones, and coordinates interventions when barriers arise. The position also supports STEP programming, events, and the SLS Plus course, while collaborating with the Associate Director on initiatives that benefit all STEP pathway students.

  • Prepares and presents sessions for STEP pathway students at events such as Admitted Student Day and First-Year Orientation. Supports Advising & Registration Day for students admitted via the STEP Pathway.
  • Monitors enrollment of STEP pathway students in designated sections of various courses. Assists with enrollment of students into designated sections as needed.
  • Supports the SLS Plus course for STEP pathway students, including but not limited to the development, facilitation, and evaluation of workshops and group advising sessions, as well as tracking completion of students requirements.
  • Works with the Associate Director to develop communication plans for students in the STEP pathways.
  • Identifies common roadblocks or barriers for students in the STEP pathway and develops recommendations to reduce those roadblocks and barriers.
  • Utilizes technology to manage a caseload of General STEP pathway students as a support role, in addition to a student's assigned academic advisor.
  • Carries out targeted outreach projects to promote retention/re-enrollment, and progression to timely graduation, of students admitted through the General STEP pathway.
  • Closely monitors the re-enrollment and progression of the students in the General STEP pathway. Executes proactive and reactive interventions, based on a variety of indicators.
  • Coordinates data from multiple platforms to identify General STEP pathway students who miss critical course or pathway milestones. Meets with students to provide guidance and support regarding next steps when a milestone is missed.
  • Documents all outreaches and meetings with students. Keeps detailed records of all student interactions across various platforms as needed.
  • Responds to students messages, phone calls, voicemails, and other inquiries and requests in a timely manner.
  • Engages in professional development to further job knowledge and skills in areas including but not limited to career and major exploration, academic advising, coaching, data analysis, etc.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of appropriate experience, or Master's degree and two (2) years of experience.


Desired Qualifications
  • Previous experience working in academic advising and/or other student service experience.
