Departmental Overview

Facilities Services works to continuously improve the campus in partnership with all members of the University community to ensure that classrooms, laboratories, and offices support teaching, learning and research. Through the efforts of over 400 dedicated staff members and serving over 10M building square feet and 1100 acres, Facilities Services includes the asset management program, custodial services, maintenance operations, engineering and technical services, environmental services, grounds operations, the Cal Zero Waste program.

Position Summary

Involves developing, implementing, and monitoring campus environmental and safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations, and ensure a safe workplace. Under direction, and with responsibility for professional judgment, works independently to manage a comprehensive pest management program for the Berkeley campus. Develops and oversees pest management operations for residence halls, dining facilities, research facilities, museums, and other facilities in accordance with federal, state, and local laws. Maintains liaison with campus, state, county and federal environmental health departments and regulatory agencies as necessary to provide for the health and safety of the campus.

Responsibilities

  • Leads technical staff and ensures that all IPM jobs are completed safely, timely and in a competent manner.
  • Plans, schedules, and assigns work to pest management employees.
  • Provides pest management services for research facilities, museums, libraries, and other campus locations, providing control without affecting museum specimens or research results.
  • Provides backup for pest management technician as needed to meet operational needs.
  • Oversees and trains pest management employees in pest management operations, including pesticide application, pesticide safety, pest biology, pest prevention, sanitation, inspection, and pest exclusion.
  • Develops appropriate control measures for new and unusual pest problems.
  • Evaluates and alters pest management techniques to improve program effectiveness.
  • Conducts experiments, consults with experts, and reviews literature to aid in problem solving.
  • Helps write and arrange annual recharge contracts.
  • Evaluates recharge workload and adjusts contracts as needed.
  • Contacts managers to determine client satisfaction.
  • Inventories and orders supplies.
  • Reviews general ledger.
  • Maintains records of pesticide use, Material Safety Data Sheets, and Specimen Labels as required by the Department of Pesticide Regulation.
  • Handles proper disposal and storage of pesticides.
  • Attends classes to maintain license for pesticide application (Qualified Applicator Certificate) or equivalent.
  • Reviews plans, advises architects, and writes design standards for pest prevention in new and existing structures.
  • Advises crafts personnel and building managers of structural modification measures to exclude pests.
  • Provides direction and guidance on complex IPM operational issues.
  • Writes reports regarding the pest management program as needed.
  • Compares in-house program with those of other campuses and private companies.
  • Consults with public health and vector control agencies to aid in solving medically important pest problems. (Example: County Mosquito Abatement contacted regarding prevention of West Nile Virus).
  • Provides in-house and interdepartmental trainings and writes educational flyers. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • At least five years of experience in the field of pest or equivalent experience, education and/or training.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Integrated Pest Management technical requirements, logistics, materials and operations, rules, regulations, laws, et cetera.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the latest pest management techniques, including pest biology and identification, sanitation, exclusion, education, habitat modification, pest prevention building design, wildlife management, pesticide safety, and least toxic pesticides.
  • Working written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills, including skills to interact successfully with widely diverse populations.
  • Working skills to organize, prioritize and complete projects within budget and time constraints.
  • Working skills to respond appropriately, efficiently and effectively to emergencies and critical situations.
  • Problem solving skills for new and unusual pest problems.
  • Leadership skills including training, mentoring, determining workload, planning, scheduling and assigning work.
  • Knowledge of county, state, and federal regulations regarding application, storage, and use of pesticides.
  • State of California Qualified Applicators Certificate (or ability to obtain certification within first six months of employment).
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $82,800.00 - $149,800.00

  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position that is eligible for UC Benefits.
  • This is an exempt monthly-paid position.
