Position Overview
| Essential Job Duties |
The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will work as part of a laboratory team, will interact closely with collaborating laboratories, and must be able to coordinate activities and reports within a diverse team of individuals. The candidate must have a strong background in quantitative genetics and metabolomics, and an understanding of metabolite biological activity. The candidate needs to be highly independent and very proficient with publications.
The position will be responsible for collecting phenotypic data, analyzing data, writing publications, preparing technical reports, manuscripts, and presentations, as well as contributing to grant proposal development to support research funding initiatives. The position will assist/participate in
PHHI and University-sponsored programs. The position will also assist in the training and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students. The ultimate goal will be to develop
DNA markers for the trait of interest.
This position is based in Kannapolis, NC.
Duties & Responsibilities will include:
- Coordinating/performing sample collection, processing, data analysis, and data interpretation.
- Perform statistical analysis to validate the data, correlate metabolic profile and biological activity, extract and analyze high-throughput molecular marker data (SNPs), perform QTL mapping and Genome Wide Association Analysis, and integrate the results with genomic data to identify candidate genes underlying the trait of interest.
- Perform lab work for functional characterization of candidate genes.
- Provide support to the peers, collaborative partners, and other students.

- Must demonstrate the ability to work independently and creatively
- Strong background in quantitative genetics, (QTL and GWAS), QTL interaction, in diploid species is essential
- Experience with metabolomics, identification, and characterization of genes involved in metabolite accumulation
- Be familiar with bioinformatics analysis needed for sequence alignment, SNP and variant call, haplotype comparison, candidate gene analysis, RNA-seq (including non-coding RNA).
- Familiar with molecular biology techniques (DNA, RNA extraction, PCR, gene cloning)
- Strong record of publications in well-recognized peer-reviewed journals.
- Ability to manage more than one project rapidly and smoothly while being able to interact and communicate with research personnel from diverse disciplines.
- Must have good communication skills, and be able to articulate clearly the scientific and technical needs in the field, as well as set clear goals, and work within an interdisciplinary team setting.
- Attention to detail and follow-through.
