Title:Access Services Librarian Division: Provost's Office Department: David L. Rice Library FLSA Status:Exempt Salary Range:$47,000 - 50,000/Annual Salary EEO Job Group:2 E2 Position Summary The Access Services Librarian provides leadership and oversight for circulation, course reserves, and interlibrary loan (ILL) services, ensuring high-quality, user-centered library experiences. This role coordinates policies, workflows, and assessment across these areas, fostering collaboration with other library units and across campus. Duties/Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day circulation, course reserves, and ILL operations, ensuring smooth service delivery and excellent customer service to library users
- Supervise, train, and evaluate circulation, course reserves, and ILL staff members, ensuring equitable workloads and professional development opportunities
- Maintain collection organization, overseeing shelving, stack maintenance, and inventory processes to support collection integrity
- Coordinate policies and procedures across circulation, ILL, and course reserves to ensure consistency, efficiency, and compliance with institutional and regulatory standards
- Address complex user issues and liaise with other library units or university departments as needed to resolve problems
- Serve as a contact for issues with the library building
- Coordinate with the Associate Director for Resource Management and User Experience in ongoing collection maintenance and assessment
- Collect, analyze, and report data on circulation, ILL, user interactions, and course reserves activity to inform decision-making and support assessment activities
- Other duties as assigned
Required Knowledge and Skills
- American Library Association-accredited Master of Library Science/Master of Library and Information Science degree required
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a library circulation or interlibrary loan unit
- Demonstrated knowledge of circulation or ILL operations
- Proficiency with integrated library systems and library service platforms
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, organizational, and written communication skills; strong public service orientation; ability to work independently and collaboratively; must be self-motivated; demonstrated flexibility and attention to detail
- Ability to regularly update technology skills and/or transition to new software
- Must be able to effectively serve and communicate with a diverse group of internal and external individuals, particularly USI faculty members and students, and staff members from other units on campus
- Must be able to accurately interpret and explain policies to library users
- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage change
- Demonstrated ability to participate in collegial processes, including service to the library, university, and community
- Must present a professional demeanor while meeting deadlines and achieving critical outcomes, even under demanding conditions, such as multiple priorities and short-notice deadlines
Preferred Knowledge and Skills
- 2 years of experience in an academic library preferred
- Strong supervisory and team-building skills, with experience managing diverse teams preferred
Regular Work Hours/Travel Requirements
- Standard workweek is Monday through Friday 7:30 to 4:00 or 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Extended hours, evenings, or weekends will be required
- Travel may be required
