Department OverviewSilent Sentinel, a growing Motorola Solutions company, specialises in surveillance equipment; most notably long range surveillance for border protection. The products are typically aimed at public safety, and commit to Motorola Solution's 'Solving for Safer' campaign. The engineering department is responsible for the development of products in multiple disciplines, namely electronics, firmware, software and mechanics. It must carry out the development life-cycle, which includes designing and testing products before handing over to production with relevant documentation. The team is agile, and tends to work on multiple parallel projects to suit the demands of the sector. It therefore requires members who will thrive in such a quick-paced environment. Job Description

Motorola Solutions is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join the Silent Sentinel team, in order to facilitate the development of ongoing projects.

This Senior Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for leading and executing complex mechanical engineering tasks across the product lifecycle, from new product introduction (NPI), continuous improvement programs (COS/MOL), and part change notification (PCN).

This role requires a high degree of technical competence in mechanical design, testing, problem-solving, and project management.

Responsibilities:

Design and Documentation

  • Lead and execute mechanical design and development projects, potentially serving as a technical lead for accessories and energy product design and development.
  • Create and update product Bill of Materials (BOMs), specifications, and engineering drawings.
  • Utilize CAD software, such as SolidWorks, for 3D modeling.

Technical Problem Solving

  • Perform failure root cause analysis for technical issues and effectively use problem-solving tools like 8D, fishbone diagram, and 5 Whys.
  • Apply DFSS (Design for Six Sigma) tools such as DOE and Tolerance Stacks to optimize designs and resolve complex issues.
  • Develop new, innovative test methods and specifications corresponding to customer complaints or design needs (e.g., cable extension tests, strain relief bending tests).

Testing and Validation

  • Develop comprehensive test plans and generate detailed test reports with clear, actionable conclusions.
  • Support and perform various mechanical robustness and qualification tests
  • Support factory/production issues and supplier audit.
  • Ensure designs meet regulatory requirements.

Project and Stakeholder Management

  • Lead and manage various projects, including PCN and COS projects, value-add programs (e.g., EDCR/cost reduction projects), and design enhancements (RFC/FRB).
  • Provide technical consultation and guidance to internal (e.g., Electrical Engineers, Product Managers) and external stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree, preferably in Mechanical Engineering
  • 5+ years of CAD experience in Solidworks (3D modelling, 2D technical drawings, BoM production)
  • Knowledge of material properties, manufacturing techniques, plating methods, coatings and fasteners
  • Ability to justify design decisions with calculations, analysis and written documentation.
  • Ability to implement designs that are ergonomic and aesthetically pleasing would be an asset
  • Ability to design for manufacture and assembly
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, concise documentation
  • Self-motivated with the ability to learn quickly and independently while also work within a team
  • A demonstrated pragmatic approach to problem solving
  • Being able to design and carry out relevant tests to help achieve high product quality
  • Experience in FEA and thermal simulation would be advantageous.

Target Base Salary Range: $120,000 - $140,000
