Primary Responsibilities

HDR's Rail Engineer will: serve as a discipline lead for rail infrastructure projects of varying sizes and complexity, such as streetcar and light rail lines, heavy rail passenger and commuter lines, freight capacity projects, yards, terminals, maintenance facilities and stations for private and public sector clients, taking responsibility for project lifecycle, ranging from site feasibility analysis to final design through the construction phase, as needed; conduct concept, design development and contract document work sessions at project sites in conjunction with Project Managers, appropriate technical professionals, and other disciplines; prepare civil design plans, specifications, and cost estimates (PS&Es), including project layout, geometrics, drainage, and utilities, calculating quantities, and reviewing construction submittals; provide technical guidance and support on rail engineering projects, contributing expertise in performing assignments and resolving issues of greater scope and complexity; support project delivery by coordinating staffing and collaborating with subconsultants to keep projects on schedule and within budget and manage routine communications (verbal and written) with the client; participate in field assessments, site visits, and construction inspections, as needed; plan and oversee work performed by junior engineers and technical staff; while supporting Project Manager on delivery projects, develop design criteria, project guides, project meeting notes, and project controls, and execute quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) procedures for project deliverables; work with the Project Manager, Business/Accounting Manager, Project Controller or Company Controller and Department Manager or Managing Principal for project reviews; and assist Client Managers and Business Development Managers in proposal development and client outreach activities.

NOTE: Under 49 CFR Part 219, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) requires that roadway workers-defined as maintenance-of-way employees-be enrolled in a drug and alcohol testing program. This includes random, post-accident, and post-mortem testing, among others. The requirement applies to employees and contractors performing regulated service duties, including those involved in safety-sensitive tasks. HDR maintains an approved FRA Drug and Alcohol Testing program. This position frequently qualifies as a roadway worker and may require FRA drug and alcohol testing.

Required Qualifications

  • A Master's Degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering field and 2 years of experience in rail or transportation-related design engineering (roadway, site/civil, railroads, transit, or linear corridor design) or a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering field and 5 years of experience in rail or transportation-related design engineering (roadway, site/civil, railroads, transit, or linear corridor design).
  • Required experience may include professional, internship, or university research experience and must include experience in: developing track and civil design plans; preparing specifications and cost estimates; construction inspection and construction management; OpenRail Designer or AutoCAD Civil 3D; MicroStation; InRoads or InRail; and Microsoft Office.
  • Must have Engineer-in-Training certification or must have passed Fundamentals of Engineering examination. Professional Engineer licensure is not a prerequisite for this position.
  • Local, regional, and national travel for routine client meetings and project walkthroughs up to 10% of time.
