Network Engineer
Information Services Department
We are an international law firm headquartered in New York seeking a Network Engineer in our New York office. The Network Engineer is responsible for the design and implementation as well as the support and management of the firm's network and unified communications. This role provides technical leadership, mentorship, and partners with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure scalable, secure, and high-performing network services in a global 24x7 environment. This position reports to the Network Engineering Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:
- Build and maintain network systems and infrastructure across all firm offices and datacenters (including LAN/WAN devices, firewalls, load balancers, unified communications, etc.)
- Lead network modernization initiatives, including cloud integration, automation, and emerging technologies.
- Partner with security, infrastructure, and application teams to ensure alignment on architecture, performance, and security requirements.
- Serve as the escalation point for complex network and telephony issues as well as incident response for major outages.
- Provide technical guidance to the engineering team.
- Define and enforce network engineering standards, change management practices, and operational procedures
- Ensure comprehensive documentation, including network diagrams, runbooks, and operational procedures.
- Other duties as deemed appropriate by the Network Engineering Manager.
REQUIREMENTS:
The ideal candidate possesses strong leadership, communication, and technical skills, with the ability to influence decisions and collaborate effectively across teams. Must demonstrate a proven ability to lead complex initiatives, troubleshoot critical issues, and operate in a fast-paced, high-availability environment. Must be available to work outside of normal business hours as needed.
- Strong experience with network engineering in enterprise and data center environments.
- Strong experience with evaluating and recommending multi-vendor solutions to solve a wide range of firm network requirements.
- Strong experience with working with telecommunications vendors provisioning and troubleshooting a variety of circuit types.
- Experience with modern Enterprise and Data Center technologies (VXLAN BGP-EVPN, LISP, SDN including SD-WAN, Enterprise Network Access Control (NAC) platforms, Data Center fabric orchestration and automation platforms, etc)
- Experience with cloud networking (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
- Proven experience designing and implementing large-scale, multi-site network architectures.
- Advanced knowledge of TCP/IP protocols and services (DNS, DHCP, NTP, etc.).
- Deep expertise in LAN/WAN technologies (EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, MPLS, VPN/DMVPN/GETVPN, QoS).
- Strong working knowledge of unified communications.
- Strong working knowledge and understanding of the technical relationship between networking architecture, VoIP system architecture, and 3rd party telephony carriers.
- Strong experience with firewalls, load balancers, and application delivery controllers.
- Strong working knowledge of network sniffers and probes and packet analysis (tcpdump, Wireshark).
- Strong working knowledge of application delivery controllers and load balancers.
- Strong working knowledge of wireless technologies and performance optimizations.
- Demonstrated expertise in analyzing and solving complex infrastructure issues.
- A strong sense of focus and excellent attention to detail, while working in a very fast-paced and energetic environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Advanced network certifications strongly preferred.
- Experience working with next generation firewalls, application delivery controllers / load balancers.
- Experience working with enterprise wireless controllers/lightweight access points.
- Experience implementing and deploying 802.1X and NAC solutions.
- Experience with structured project management or have served as technical lead on infrastructure related project teams.
- Experience with multi factor authentication systems.
- Excellent documentation skills, including creating logical and physical network diagrams and runbooks using tools such as Visio and Word.
- Strong knowledge of network management tools such as Solarwinds Orion.
