Senior Geographic Information System Specialist

The Sr. GIS Specialist that will be a key member of AFHSD's Integrated Biosurveillance (IB) Branch, providing vital support to the GIS team. You will contribute to developing, implementing, and overseeing advanced DoD GIS products for tracking health events, disease outbreaks, and environmental hazards that could affect DoD assets worldwide. Your role will also involve staying up to date on the latest technological advancements and driving innovation with the team to ensure we maintain our leadership in biosurveillance capabilities.

Compensation & Benefits:

Estimated Starting Salary Range for Senior GIS Specialist: $82,500.00-$87,500.00

Pay commensurate with experience.

Senior GIS Specialist Responsibilities Include:

  • Innovatively develop interactive maps, charts, and reports to effectively present findings to stakeholders, leveraging the power of automation and Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML) techniques.
  • Develop and optimize custom GIS tools and workflows using scripting languages (e.g., Python) to streamline and automate processes.
  • Proficiency in database administration, including the maintenance of geospatial and non-spatial data, ensuring data integrity, and optimizing data retrieval and storage processes.
  • Assist with the design, development, testing, and maintenance of new GIS applications, such as web-maps, dashboards, and Experience Builder, with a strong focus on innovation and integration.
  • Drive decision-making processes by conducting advanced spatial analysis and modeling using AI techniques, enabling site selection, resource allocation, and risk assessment to be performed with efficiency and accuracy.
  • Create talking points, tables, figures, maps, data visualizations, and slides for presentations, posters, and publications with minimal oversight.
  • Collaborate with the IB team to coordinate responses for information requests, develop executive summaries (EXSUMs), and deliver presentations that meet the unique needs of AFHSD clients, DoD leaders, and other stakeholders.
  • Utilize problem-solving skills to diagnose and troubleshoot application issues to overcome challenges and maintain optimal performance.
  • Embrace a proactive approach by actively seeking additional opportunities and contributing to the team environment.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Senior GIS Specialist Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in GIS, Environmental Science, or related field (Master's preferred).
  • 5-7 years of GIS experience; 2-5 years supporting Federal Government clients, preferably DoD.
  • Proficiency with ESRI tools (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Server, Portal).
  • Understanding of vector and raster GIS types, allowing for comprehensive data anslysis manipulation and visualization.
  • Strong programming skills in Python; experience with JavaScript, HTML/CSS, C#, or .NET a plus.
  • Experience with AWS S3 (or similar), geospatial data types (vector/raster), and data integration.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and deliver under tight deadlines.
  • Strong written/verbal communication skills and a detail-oriented, collaborative work ethic.
  • Must possess an Active Secret Clearance or can obtain one.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal
