The Executive Director Health Information Management provides executive leadership, strategic direction, and oversight for the organization's Health Information Management (HIM) operations across the health system. Ensures the accuracy, integrity, privacy, and security of patient health information in compliance with all legal, regulatory, and accreditation standards. Leads enterprise wide HIM functions including documentation integrity, data governance, record management, technology optimization, reporting, and medical information retrieval. Partners with senior leadership to advance organizational strategy, digital health transformation, and operational excellence.

Essential Job Function

  • Develops and executes long-range strategic vision for health information, documentation quality, and data governance across the system aligned with organizational goals, supporting clinical excellence, revenue optimization, and digital transformation initiatives. Serves as a strategic partner to executive leaders in clinical, operational, financial, and digital health domains.

  • Leads enterprise-wide risk mitigation strategies related to documentation, record integrity, information privacy, and regulatory exposure, ensuring full compliance with federal/state laws, accreditation requirements, and internal policies governing coding, privacy, confidentiality, and security.

  • Directs daily operations for all HIM functions including coding integrity, clinical documentation integrity, release of information, document imaging, record retention, and archival processes.

  • Ensures timely, accurate, and high-quality medical record services system wide; establishes performance expectations, operating standards, smart goals and KPIs.

  • Oversees internal/external audits, and system-level readiness; communicates effectively with senior leaders, medical staff, and cross-functional teams; and influences decisions through clarity and insight.

  • Collaborates with IT, clinical, and operational teams to advance system efficiencies, improve workflows, and enhance data accuracy and accessibility; evaluates emerging technologies (AI, automation, NLP) for HIM modernization.

  • Uses analytics, performance metrics, and benchmarking to guide strategy and operational improvements; collaborates with quality and audit services to monitor documentation accuracy, compliance audits, and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Applies strong financial stewardship, budget management, and ROI analysis to departmental and system-level decisions.; develops and manages operating and capital budgets for HIM; and ensures cost-effective practices, appropriate staffing levels, and strategic resource allocation. Evaluates financial impact of HIM initiatives, technology investments, and workflow improvements.

  • Builds strong partnerships across administrative, clinical, and operational teams to achieve enterprise goals; represents HIM in system initiatives related to revenue cycle optimization, patient safety, quality improvement, compliance, and EHR advancement; and serves as a liaison with external agencies, regulatory bodies, and professional organizations.

  • Recruits, develops, and retains high performing HIM leaders and staff; and creates a culture of engagement, accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.

Education:

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management Administration

Preferred:

  • Master's Degree in a health-related field

Experience

Required:

  • 7 years of progressive supervisory/leadership experience in a Health Information Management department

Preferred:

  • Experience in multi-facility or health system environment

Licensure/Certification/Listing

Required:

  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
