What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a R&D S&E, Systems Engineering

The selected candidate will serve as a technical program manager and lead systems engineer on recurring flight test campaigns involving design, analysis, integration and testing operations, with a particular focus on experimental technology integration and data collection. They will support fielding and flight test operations directly, as well as supporting systems integration and test of flight vehicles and sub-systems/components servicing a wide array of complex and cutting-edge experiments and technologies.

On any given day, one may be called upon to:

  • Oversee Design and Test activities of complex flight test vehicles, including dynamic multi-disciplinary coordination and leadership in a variety of laboratory and field settings.
  • Conduct trade studies and support advanced technology development
  • Plan and Conduct assembly and test operations, including those with integrated systems hazards and ordnance devices
  • Plan and Conduct remote fielding operations and flight tests, including tests involving controlled ordnance and other hazards
  • Operate within a dynamic, team-focused environment, including leadership of highly-performing multi-disciplinary sub-teams making up the broader program effort
  • Coordinate at a high level with external industry partners, government sponsors, and other government agency teammates towards nationwide flight test collaborative efforts, including the planning of future flight test opportunities across government and industry performers.
Salary Range

$117,500 - $235,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.
Qualifications We Desire

The ideal System Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).
  • Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Master's degree in Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering from an ABET accredited university, plus 5 years relevant experience.
  • Curriculum or practical experience with Systems Engineering principles and application.
  • Experience in technical project leadership.
  • Demonstrated technical contributions to past project deliverables.
  • Ability to support moderate travel (up to 25%)
  • Willingness to work around ordnance systems and other controlled hazards
  • Experience with traditional Systems Engineering principles, including Design Definition, Configuration Management, Requirements development, tracking, and verification, and Risk Management
  • Proficiency with the use and application of Model Based Systems Engineering tools such as Cameo MagicDraw.
  • Program management experience involving scheduling, risk management, budget tracking, and sponsor interface reporting responsibilities
  • Experience in electronic design tools (PSPICE, etc.)
  • Experience in mechanical CAD tools (Solidworks, Creo, etc)
  • Experience with Avionics Component Development, Qualification, and Certification
  • Ground or Flight Testing Experience
  • Systems Integration using Flight and Test Hardware and Software
  • Familiarity with Hardware-in-the-loop or Software-in-the-loop Systems
  • Proven experience working in a Team Environment
  • Experience Fielding and Deploying Systems at Test Locations
  • Experience with placement and execution of Government and Sandia contracts.
  • Active DOE L or Q clearance or DoD equivalent
About Our Team

Our team leads and supports flight and ground test programs associated with the support of the nations cutting edge needs. Your work enables the development of Missile Defense Systems, Hypersonic Strike Systems, R&D Rocket Systems, as well as Nuclear Deterrence systems. We also collaborate with laboratory and industry efforts to increase technology readiness level of advanced manufacturing techniques and material compositions, with a specific focus on flight test applications. We assume responsibility for the design, development, and demonstration of various missile and launch vehicle systems by applying individual technologies and combining them into system level solutions that meet the needs of the customer. Your work will be dynamic and involves extensive interaction within Sandia as well as outside agencies. Our team members are integral flight test project engineers and technologists active in all aspects of vehicle design, integration and launch, mission planning, and post-test analysis. We maintain relationships with active national test ranges such as KTF, PMRF, WFF, WSMR, RTS, VAFB, KSC, and others. Sponsors include US Navy, Army, and Air Force, MDA, DTRA, DARPA, NASA, as well as private industry.

Security Clearance
