Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret, and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education, and exhibition.

The Exhibition department is seeking a full-time Director of Exhibition Initiatives to guide the development and implementation of best practices in Exhibition content and experience with special focus on the Museum's strategic goals related to cultural storytelling, climate change and biodiversity, and audience engagement and expansion.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Guide exhibition strategy development with the VP of Exhibitions related to the Museum's goals, working with colleagues to develop prototypes to access the success of these initiatives.
  • Collaboratively guide concept and design development of content and exhibition experiences to ensure thematic, experiential, and visual continuity, and that key strategic objectives of each project are met.
  • In collaboration with Exhibition colleagues, Science, Education, and other departments, assess the current condition of permanent halls in terms of content, exhibit design, and visitor experience. Develop potential remediation and enhancement initiatives.
  • Support and develop strategies for expanding the Museum's outreach and impact through exhibitions, while fostering collaboration with other Museum partners.


The expected salary range for the Director of Exhibition Initiatives is $125,000/annual - $135,000/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization, and depth and scope of experience.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in museum studies, nonprofit management, Science, English, or another relevant field.
  • 10 years of experience with exhibition content and design development.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate-level degree in Science or museum studies.
Physical Demands

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
