Job Overview:

The Wastewater Pretreatment Plant Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the facility's wastewater pretreatment systems. This role ensures all discharges meet regulatory requirements prior to release to the municipal wastewater system or environment. The operator monitors equipment, collects and analyzes samples, performs routine maintenance, and maintains accurate records in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.

Responsibilities:


  • Operate and monitor wastewater pretreatment systems, including pumps, tanks, chemical feed systems, and control panels

  • Collect wastewater samples and perform routine laboratory tests (pH, solids, metals, flow, etc.)

  • Adjust chemical feeds and system parameters to maintain compliance with discharge permits

  • Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on pretreatment equipment

  • Respond to alarms, process upsets, and emergency situations in a safe and timely manner

  • Maintain accurate operating logs, sample records, and regulatory documentation

  • Assist with regulatory inspections and reporting to environmental agencies

  • Follow all safety procedures, including lockout/tagout, confined space, and chemical handling requirements

  • Communicate operational issues to supervisors and coordinate with maintenance or engineering staff

  • Maintain housekeeping standards and ensure proper storage and labeling of chemicals



Requirements:


  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • 1+ years of testing experience in wastewater treatment processes or industrial Maintenance



Key Competencies:


  • Ability to read and understand permits, operating procedures, and safety data sheets (SDS)

  • Basic mathematical skills for calculations related to flow rates, chemical dosing, and sampling

  • Ability to work independently and follow written and verbal instructions

  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs

  • Ability to stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, and work in confined spaces

  • Exposure to chemicals, wastewater, and varying weather conditions

  • Use of required personal protective equipment (PPE)



Preferences:


  • Wastewater or Pretreatment Operator Certification (state or equivalent), or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe

  • Previous experience operating a wastewater treatment or pretreatment facility

  • Experience with industrial wastewater, chemical treatment, or laboratory testing

  • Familiarity with environmental regulations (EPA, state DEQ, local sewer authority requirements)

  • Mechanical aptitude and experience with pumps, valves, and process equipment

  • Experience using SCADA systems or computerized control systems




Travel & Work Arrangements/Requirements:

This position will be based at our site in Mocksville, NC, with no anticipated travel.
