Your Job

The Senior Process Control (PC) Engineer mentors new Advanced Process Control and optimization engineers. As a subject-matter expert, you demonstrate advanced control techniques and tools while managing stakeholder relationships across Corporate and Pine Bend. You will work with leaders and individual contributors across the organization to communicate the vision, challenges, and value created by advanced control solutions and AI for process control. You'll drive Blender Optimization projects, hands-on development of Imubit RTO, and partner with our strategic vendors. Strong candidates will promote the advantages of AI for process control and real-time optimization and develop multi-unit solutions and experiments using tools like DLPC, ORTOmation, GDOT, DMC3, and more. This role is a long-term commitment that includes developing refinery-wide APC and RTO strategies, collaborating on controller scope, and staying current with industry trends and transformative technologies such as inferentials monitoring in PI AF, SEEQ integration, controller health metrics, and inhouse applications like DISTILL and POGI as they mature.

Our Team

Our team consists of two (2) Sr. Process Control Engineers that are SMEs and five (5) APC Engineers on the optimization working teams that provide the modeling and controls expertise necessary to turn optimization strategies into control solutions. Sr. PC Engineers are the technical mentors that remain the most knowledgeable on the next DMC3 and DLPC versions, testing key features before rolling out to the APC team. The SPCE understands the infrastructure and architecture of process control applications and are the primary interface for coordinating future improvements and planning updates with ITOT (HTS).

What You Will Do In Your Role

  • Mentor, onboard, and develop Advanced Process Control and optimization engineers, serving as a primary technical coach and knowledge resource.
  • Partner with stakeholders across the organization, from leadership to operators, to align APC, RTO, and AI solutions with refinery goals.
  • Collaborate with strategic vendors through Design Partnerships and technology pilots.
  • Lead and support high-profile APC, AI, and Optimization projects as the senior technical expert, leveraging the comparative advantage of other capabilities.
  • Assess the health of APC and RTO applications across the refinery and recommend improvements or alternative optimization approaches to the APCE on the optimization working teams.
  • Stay current on emerging process control and AI technologies through industry forums and consortia.
  • Educate engineers and operators on APC, AI, and multivariable control through formal and informal training.
  • Communicate technical and economic value clearly through strong written and verbal interactions.

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering OR ten (10) years of work experience with process control systems.
  • Ten (10) years or more of work experience as a process or controls engineer.
  • Proven experience communicating effectively with various levels of a plant organization (engineers, managers, operators, team leaders, contractors).
  • This role is not eligible for Visa Sponsorship

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Ten (10) years or more of advanced control and/or process engineering work experience in refining at FHR.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and operators in Aspen DMC3 suite of tools or Imubit DLPC applications.
  • Experience with AI/ML in process control and optimization applications.
  • Experience with refinery economics, constraints, oil-flow planning, and optimization.
  • Experience with process modeling and/or advanced process control fundamentals.
  • Experience using AspenTech's suite of APC software tools and Imubit's applications.

For this role, we anticipate paying $140,000 - $200,000 per year. This role is eligible for variable pay, issued as a monetary bonus or in another form.
