Description

The Supervisor - Respiratory Therapy works under the direction of the Director - Respiratory Therapy and the Manager- Respiratory Therapy to coordinate, and operationalize staff and program activities. Serving as the front-line representative for respiratory care services management, the incumbent provides direct oversight of operations across all shifts and ensures, through observation and routine audits, that clinical practices align with departmental, hospital, and regulatory standards. The Supervisor collaborates closely with the Manager to guide, coach, and monitor direct reports including administering corrective actions when necessary and completing annual performance evaluations for assigned staff.

The Supervisor supports department activities and is responsible for the enforcement of hospital-wide and departmental policies and procedures to ensure full compliance with applicable legal, regulatory, and accrediting standards governing respiratory care operations, including but not limited to CMS, National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC), Department of Health, and The Joint Commission (TJC) requirements.

As a clinical expert the incumbent advocates for patient safety and clinical outcomes. The Supervisor Respiratory Therapy is expected to have vast experience in pediatric and neonatal respiratory care, to have sound judgment, troubleshooting, and ability to be a resource in all patient care areas. The Supervisor is a role model for professional communication and escalates concerns to the Clinical Manager as needed. The Supervisor takes a bedside assignment at least once a week and ensure adequate staffing coverage on the shift.

In addition to clinical leadership, the Supervisor assists the Manager and Director with establishing best practices and collecting data for department performance dashboards. The Supervisor also assists with development of department policy and procedures and performance improvement activities. The incumbent also supports education, training, and competency initiatives required for Respiratory Therapists.

Qualifications Minimum Education
  • Associate's Degree in Respiratory Care with 2 years' experience in progressively responsible lead roles (e.g. charge, shift coordinator, educator, etc.) (required)
  • Bachelor's Degree in Respiratory Care or healthcare-related field (preferred)
Minimum Experience
  • 6 years progressively responsible experience in respiratory care (required)
Required Licenses
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist - Credentialed by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC). RCP License from the District of Columbia DOH Health Regulation and Licensing Administration. (required)
Required Certifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - (required)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - (required)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - within 180 days (required)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) - within 180 days (required)
  • STABLE- within 180 days (preferred)

Functional Accountabilities

Leadership * Ensure that staff therapists provide patient care in accordance with hospital policies, Respiratory Care Services (RCS) departmental procedures, and applicable interdepartmental guidelines for all age ranges treated at CNH while supervising the shift. * Actively participate in management team meetings convened by Respiratory Care Services leadership. * Provide direct oversight of operations across all shifts, maintains the staffing assignment and workflow to ensure adequate departmental coverage and alignment with operational needs. * Assist clinical managers in coordinating, overseeing, and maintaining the Respiratory Care Services staffing schedule to ensure adequate departmental coverage and alignment with operational needs. * Conducts performance management activities for direct reports, including ongoing coaching, timely counseling, and completion of comprehensive annual performance evaluations.* Serve as the front-line representative and resource person throughout the organization, supporting interdisciplinary team members in matters related to respiratory care services, clinical education, and performance improvement/quality assurance initiatives. * Embrace organizational changes and practice improvements by actively participating in the implementation of new or enhanced programs, technologies, equipment, systems, and processes that promote quality, safety, and operational efficiency. * Participate in ongoing accreditation and regulatory readiness activities to ensure continuous compliance with standards established by The Joint Commission, the Department of Health, and other relevant regulatory agencies. * Appropriately utilize the established chain of command and follow all escalation policies to ensure timely communication and issue resolution.

Clinical Performance * Performs clinical duties alongside assigned staff at least once per week to maintain clinical competence, support workflow, and model expected standards of care. * Responds promptly to emergency situations; conducts rapid assessment, initiates appropriate interventions, and escalates concerns through the established chain of command when necessary to ensure patient safety. * Serves as an advocate for the safe and effective delivery of all respiratory care modalities by ensuring adherence to clinical best practices, departmental policies, and evidencebased standards. * Participates in rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays, as assigned by the Manager/Director to support departmental coverage and operational needs. * Performs clinical duties as adjunct transporter.

Program Administration * Ensures staff adherence to organizational and departmental policies regarding professional behavior, timekeeping, and attendance standards. * Demonstrates proficiency in compiling, interpreting, and analyzing departmental data to support performance dashboards, operational reviews, and quality improvement initiatives. * Assists in the development, revision, and maintenance of departmental policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements and bestpractice standards. * Monitors staff schedules to support adequate coverage, operational efficiency, and compliance with staffing guidelines. * Maintains accurate written documentation of performancerelated discussions, interventions, and followup actions in accordance with organizational protocols. * Reviews safety events involving Respiratory Care Services and facilitates appropriate followup actions, including documentation, staff education, and process improvements. * Conducts periodic audits of respiratory therapists' clinical documentation within the electronic medical record (EMR) to support quality assurance, regulatory readiness, and continuous improvement efforts.

Staff Support * Communicates effectively-both verbally and in writing-when handing off critical information, and conducts daily shift huddles to ensure staff are informed, aligned, and supported. * Ensures shift assignments are appropriate based on patient acuity, staff competency, and departmental needs; continually assesses and reallocates resources throughout the shift to maintain safe and efficient operations. * Anticipates staff needs, provides timely support, and follows through to ensure concerns are resolved and operational barriers are addressed. * Ensures new employees are properly oriented to their job responsibilities in accordance with established orientation protocols and departmental onboarding standards. * Provides timely, constructive performance feedback to staff, reinforcing strengths and identifying opportunities for improvement to support professional growth. * Coordinates shift workflow to ensure respiratory therapy services are delivered in a timely, efficient, and qualityfocused manner. * Responds promptly and respectfully to requests for assistance from staff, interdisciplinary team members, and ancillary providers. * Addresses inquiries and resolves complaints arising during the shift, ensuring appropriate followup and escalation when necessary.

Education* Assists in the development, coordination, and implementation of training programs and inservice education for Respiratory Care Services (RCS), ensuring content aligns with departmental goals and current best practices. * Facilitates and delivers training sessions to RCS staff and interdisciplinary team members as directed by Respiratory Care Services Leadership, promoting competency, collaboration, and continuous learning. * Ensures staff compliance with all required departmental and hospital annual mandatory education, as well as maintenance of licensure and certifications required for the Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) role. * Assists with scheduling staff for required certification courses such as Basic Life Support (BLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), ensuring timely completion to support operational readiness and regulatory standards.
