Who are we:

The Cath lab is an ACC-accredited Chest Pain center and ACE-accredited PCI Center. As a 24/7 STEMI program the Cath Lab offers state of the art procedures such as TAVRs, Mitral Clips, Watchman/Amulet, PFO Closures, and is a high-volume PCI center. There are 6 Cath procedure rooms, located in the newly built Crystal Springs Tower. The Crystal Springs Tower is a 400,000-square-foot expansion to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital - the home of our Cardiovascular Institute and an expanded Emergency Department.

What we do:

Some of the complex therapies/treatments performed include:

* Cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring (SWAN pulmonary artery pressure monitoring, continuous trans venous pacing (TVP)

* Equipment includes: Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), IMPELLA ventricular assist device, Shockwave IVL, Rotablator and CSI Atherectomy, Coroflow MVD studies.

* Procedures: Diagnostic, Interventional and Complex/High Risk PCI, Structural (TAVR, PFO/ASD, Paravalvular Leak, LAA Closure, Evoque Triscuspid VR, Mitral and Tricuspid Valve TEER), Cardiomems, LVAD/ Advanced Heart Failure, Diagnostic and Interventional Peripheral Procedures

* Structural Research Clinical Trials: BASELINE Trial, ENCIRCLE trial, Cerclage EFS, CLASP II Tricuspid Regurgitation trial, PARADIGM trial, ASAP II trial, CONFORM Pivotal Trial

* Coronary Artery Disease Clinical Trials: ARTISAN Study, SAFE STEMI Study, Protect IV Trial, WARRIOR Trial

The CVT I- RN assists physician with direct patient care during catheterization or interventional and device implant procedures in the scrub, circulator, and monitor positions. Delivers quality service through a team-oriented, collaborative approach to care for adult and geriatric patients.

  • Provides direct assistance to physicians and patient to achieve optimum outcomes. Prepares patient and technically advanced equipment for advanced invasive procedures. Scrubs and assists physician during procedures. Advises and plans with physicians on procedural strategies and supplies. Assists in emergent conditions.
  • Assures patient, physician, and team needs are met during procedure. Serves as patient advocate, advising on sedation and pain medication for patient comfort. Obtains and sets up procedural supplies and equipment. Operates digital x-ray equipment and administers medications under the supervision and guidance of a licensed physician. Uses advanced critical thinking skills to manage emergency situations.
  • Monitors and interprets EKG and hemodynamics during procedures. Inputs data from patient history, labs, and current case proceedings including equipment/supplies and documentation for ACC, conscious sedation, pain management, and medication administration. Performs basic data manipulation to obtain value areas, shunt calculation, and cardiac outputs.
  • Participates as part of procedure team to provide specific patient care functions such as transport, sheath removal, closure site care, etc. Participates in providing and assuring informed consent and patient education.
  • Contributes to Carilion Clinic's scorecard, performance improvement activities, and mission. Actively participates in obtaining desired service line outcome.
  • Provides Procedural Sedation according to the guidelines set forth in the Carilion Clinic "Procedural Sedation/Analgesia, Care of Patients Receiving" policy for patients greater than 12 years of age. Maintains appropriate credential to monitor patients receiving sedation/analgesia.
  • Interacts with unit staff, physicians, management, customers, and ancillary departments. Maintains patient, staff and customer confidentiality. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development. Observes and documents data reflective of the patients' status, interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age and specific needs, and provides the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.

    Exposure may include radiation, infectious diseases, biohazards, and hazardous material, including regulated medical waste. Physical requirements include lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, reaching, walking, prolonged periods of standing, wearing a 15-lb. lead apron during procedures. Must be able to maintain continual insertion site pressure for a minimum of 30 minutes for hemostatic seal. Flexibility in work schedule required. Job can be stressful and fast paced.


What We Require:

Education: Graduate of Accredited School of Nursing

Experience: Critical care experience preferred.

Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Must have valid nursing license (RN) in the state of Virginia.

Life Support: Must have and maintain current AHA BLS-HCP certification. Must successfully complete AHAACLS within six months of hire date and maintain current status.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Effective interpersonal, communication, and teamworking skills required. Must successfully complete orientation and competency validation for position. Successful completion of cardiac monitoring course required.
