Overview:

Sr Computation Design Lead

Location: Minneapolis, MN; Milwaukee, WI; Boston, MA; Washington, DC; or San Francisco, CA

The Sr Computation Design Lead is a visionary leader who drives the advancement of computational design, digital innovation, and data-driven practice across HGA. As a key member of the Digital Practice Group (DPG), this role partners with design, engineering, and technology leaders to integrate cutting-edge computational methodologies into every phase of the design process, elevating design excellence, project performance, and business outcomes.

Operating at the intersection of architecture, engineering, and technology, this role champions the adoption of emerging tools, workflows, and automation strategies that enable more intelligent, efficient, and impactful project delivery. Through expertise in parametric design, algorithmic thinking, digital visualization, and process automation, this leader develops scalable solutions to complex design challenges while fostering a culture of innovation and continuous learning across the firm.

As a trusted advisor and influential collaborator, you will build strong partnerships across disciplines, guides digital transformation initiatives, and communicates the value of computational design through compelling visual storytelling and measurable results.

In this role you will:

Computational Design Strategy & Innovation

    Develop and advance computational design strategies that enhance design quality, project performance, and digital delivery across HGA.
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement emerging technologies, automation solutions, and data-driven methodologies that support innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Establish scalable computational design frameworks, standards, and best practices that promote consistency, efficiency, and design excellence.
  • Partner with Digital Practice Group leadership to advance strategic initiatives and strengthen HGA's computational design capabilities.

Project Integration & Design Excellence

  • Collaborate with project teams to integrate computational design methodologies throughout all phases of the design process.
  • Lead the development of parametric models, generative design studies, automation solutions, and performance-driven workflows that address complex design challenges.
  • Partner with Architects, Engineers, and technical specialists to improve interdisciplinary coordination, workflow efficiency, and project outcomes.
  • Apply computational design approaches to support informed decision-making, design exploration, and project delivery.

Visualization, Communication & Digital Storytelling

  • Guide visualization strategies that communicate complex design concepts, systems, and data through compelling and accessible visual narratives.
  • Develop and support the creation of graphics and digital content that enhance design communication and stakeholder engagement.
  • Leverage computational tools and visualization techniques to strengthen design presentations, storytelling, and communication of project value.
  • Translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable insights for both technical and non-technical audiences.

Leadership, Collaboration & Advocacy

  • Serve as a trusted advisor and advocate for computational design, promoting its value across practices, sectors, and project teams.
  • Build strong relationships with design, engineering, and digital practice leaders to advance collaboration and integrated digital workflows.
  • Mentor and develop team members through coaching, knowledge sharing, and training initiatives that strengthen computational design capabilities across the firm.
  • Monitor industry trends and represent HGA through professional engagement, thought leadership, and participation in industry events.

You will need to have:

  • Accredited degree in Architecture, Computational Design, Engineering, Digital Design, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in computational design, architecture, engineering, or related AEC disciplines, including experience leading design technology and innovation initiatives.
  • Advanced proficiency in parametric and algorithmic design tools, including Rhino, Grasshopper, Dynamo, or comparable platforms.
  • Strong understanding of architectural design processes, project delivery methods, interdisciplinary collaboration, and digital practice within the AEC industry.
  • Demonstrated success integrating computational design methodologies into project workflows to improve design outcomes, efficiency, and innovation.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively and influence diverse stakeholders across multiple disciplines and leadership levels.
  • Proven experience building collaborative relationships, mentoring others, and driving the adoption of new technologies, processes, and ways of working.
  • Strong visual communication and digital storytelling skills, with the ability to translate complex ideas into compelling and accessible design narratives.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and the application of emerging technologies, including AI-enabled tools, automation, data-informed design, and related innovations.

Salary Information:

The pay range listed aligns to the geography of the office for which this position is posted. Actual compensation will be based upon work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer. Individuals in this role working more than 24 hours a week on a regular basis are eligible to participate in HGA's robust benefit programs which include an annual bonus and success sharing bonus program, 401(k) guaranteed contribution, paid parental leave, medical, dental and life insurance plans as well as PTO and short- and long-term disability programs. Salary Range: $135,000 - $165,000 depending on location (Mid-West or East/West Coast), qualifications and experience.
