THE POSITION

The Corrections Utility Plant Operator position with the Department of Corrections offers an exciting chance to work with important facility systems at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Coal Township. This role lets you build strong technical skills while supporting safe and reliable operations. You will play a key part in keeping essential equipment running smoothly each day. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports the safe and efficient operation of the boiler plant by maintaining equipment, monitoring systems, and directing inmate workers. The work ensures reliable facility operations and helps maintain a secure and well-functioning environment. As a Corrections Utility Plant Operator, you will perform the following duties:

  • Boiler Operation: Maintain boiler equipment, assess system performance, and complete routine and emergency tasks
  • Equipment Maintenance: Operate and service pumps, fans, and other auxiliary systems used in plant operations
  • Water Testing: Test boiler water chemistry, track chemical levels, and maintain accurate logs
  • Plant Housekeeping: Clean work areas, organize supplies, and perform daily inventories
  • Inmate Supervision: Oversee inmate work crews, monitor movement, and enforce tool and supply control
  • Daily Documentation: Communicate with supervisors and complete required paperwork and inventory records

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40-hour work week
  • Work schedule will be determined from the following shifts: 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM, and 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM, with rotating days off.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $47,925.00 (before taxes). However, a higher salary may be established in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Three years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of a steam or hot water generating plant, or a steam and electric generating plant; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Additional Requirements:

  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
