Electron Beam (EB) Welder / Lang Technician
Pay: Between $40 to $48 an hour Location: Natick, MA 01760 Job Type: Long Term Contract with opportunity to extend Position Summary The Electron Beam (EB) Welder / Lang Technician is responsible for the setup, operation, programming, and maintenance of electron beam welding systems used to manufacture high-precision components for aerospace, defense, energy, and other highly regulated industries. This role combines advanced welding technology, fixture and tooling setup, CNC programming, mechanical assembly, and quality inspection to ensure the production of complex, tight-tolerance welded assemblies. Essential Responsibilities Electron Beam Welding Operations
- Set up and operate Electron Beam (EB) welding equipment in vacuum and partial-vacuum environments.
- Program and adjust welding parameters including beam current, accelerating voltage, focus settings, and travel speed.
- Align and calibrate electron beams using optical, digital, and precision measurement systems.
- Monitor welding cycles to ensure process stability, vacuum integrity, and adherence to quality requirements.
- Perform welds on high-value, tight-tolerance components in accordance with engineering specifications.
Tooling, Setup & Fixture Fabrication
- Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, CAD models, and weld specifications.
- Design, assemble, and modify fixtures, tooling, and work-holding devices for complex welded assemblies.
- Perform precision part alignment, fit-up, and setup using calipers, micrometers, indicators, and other measuring equipment.
- Clean and prepare materials and components to meet vacuum welding cleanliness standards.
Quality & Inspection
- Conduct visual inspections of completed welds and prepare parts for non-destructive testing (NDT).
- Verify dimensional and quality requirements are met throughout the manufacturing process.
- Maintain accurate weld documentation, process records, and traceability requirements.
- Support compliance with applicable aerospace, defense, and customer quality standards.
Equipment Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Troubleshoot welding equipment issues including vacuum leaks, arc-outs, beam instability, and filament failures.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance on EB welding systems, vacuum chambers, pumps, and related equipment.
- Replace consumables such as filaments and perform basic machine calibration activities.
- Assist engineering and manufacturing teams in process improvements and root cause investigations.
Qualifications Required
- 2+ years of experience operating Electron Beam (EB) welding systems or comparable advanced welding equipment.
- Experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings, GD&T, and manufacturing specifications.
- Strong understanding of welding principles, metallurgy, heat-affected zones (HAZ), and precision fabrication techniques.
- Experience using precision measuring instruments including calipers, micrometers, and indicators.
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and process-related equipment issues.
- Basic computer skills and experience working with CNC-controlled equipment.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods.
Preferred
- Experience with Sciaky, PTR, Leybold, or similar Electron Beam welding systems.
- TIG (GTAW) welding experience for tack welding, fixturing, or repair work.
- Aerospace, defense, nuclear, or other highly regulated manufacturing experience.
- Knowledge of AWS D17.1, NAVSEA, ASME, or similar welding standards.
- Fixture design, tooling fabrication, or Lang Technician experience.
- Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) exposure or certification.
