About the Neuro ICU

Our Neuro ICU provides specialized, around-the-clock care for patients experiencing complex, life-threatening neurological and neurosurgical conditions. As a regional referral center, the unit cares for patients requiring the highest level of critical care, including:

  • Acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Ruptured cerebral aneurysms
  • Brain and spinal cord tumors
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Status epilepticus and complex seizure disorders
  • Coma and severe neuromuscular conditions

The unit utilizes advanced neurological technologies, including:

  • Continuous EEG monitoring
  • Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring
  • Multimodal neuromonitoring
  • Brain oxygenation and temperature monitoring
  • Advanced hemodynamic and critical care technologies

Working alongside neurointensivists, neurosurgeons, neurologists, pharmacists, rehabilitation specialists, and multidisciplinary care teams, our nurses provide expert care for some of the region's most medically complex patients.

The Opportunity

The Nursing Director is responsible for the strategic, operational, financial, and clinical leadership of the Neuro ICU. Reporting to senior nursing leadership, this individual will create an environment that promotes exceptional patient outcomes, associate engagement, professional nursing practice, and continuous quality improvement.

This leader will oversee all aspects of departmental operations, including:

  • Driving operational excellence in a fast-paced, high-acuity critical care environment
  • Building and developing high-performing nursing teams through coaching, mentorship, and succession planning
  • Managing staffing, scheduling, productivity, and resource utilization
  • Leading quality, patient safety, regulatory readiness, and performance improvement initiatives
  • Collaborating with physician leaders and interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes
  • Managing departmental budgets and ensuring responsible fiscal stewardship
  • Supporting evidence-based practice, nursing research, and professional development
  • Fostering a culture of accountability, shared governance, collaboration, and innovation
  • Advancing the standards of Magnet nursing excellence

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing
  • Active RN license in the District of Columbia
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive nursing experience
  • Previous nursing leadership or management experience
  • Current BLS certification

Preferred

  • Master's degree in Nursing or related field
  • Leadership experience in a Neuro ICU, ICU, or other high-acuity critical care environment
  • Specialty certification such as CCRN, CNRN, SCRN, or NE-BC/NEA-BC
  • Experience leading quality improvement, operational initiatives, and multidisciplinary teams within an academic medical center
