Overview

The Engineer performs assignments of moderate to high complexity in engineering design, problem analysis, planning, conducts field investigations and prepares associated reports, specifications, standards and test memoranda within the field or fields of responsibility.

This position does not provide employment pursuant to the terms of a STEM OPT Training Plan.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Perform assignments of moderate to high complexity in engineering design, problem analysis, planning, conducts field investigations and prepares associated reports, specifications, standards and test memoranda within the field or fields of responsibility.
  • Responsible for the complete management of selected projects; design review of gas transmission and distribution systems, equipment, and installation specifications, bid preparation and evaluation, appropriations, scheduling, construction and acceptance testing.
  • Prepare and/or direct the preparation of design packages (specifications/drawings) and the review contractor shop drawings.
  • Perform cost benefit analysis/conduct conceptual studies to determine best designs.
  • Prepare or direct the preparation of budgets and appropriation requests for specific projects; perform calculations for specific projects and be required to direct, coordinate and review work of outside consultant, technicians and designers.
  • Provide direct field support in response to failures and respond to emergencies on a 24/7 basis, when necessary. Will be required to travel to all Con Edison sites requiring support.
  • Provide support to Gas Engineering and Gas Technical Operations, and Construction Departments for the engineering design, procurement, and field support of projects.
  • Perform other related tasks and assignments as required.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering and 3 years of engineering experience in: gas systems, mechanical components, HVAC and/or fire protection, or
  • Master's Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering and 2 years of engineering experience in: gas systems, mechanical components, HVAC and/or fire protection.
Preferred Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering and 3 years of engineering experience in: gas systems, mechanical components, HVAC and/or fire protection.
Relevant Work Experience
  • Proficiency in gas codes (NYCRR Part 255 and DOT 49 CFR Part 192) and familiarity with mechanical industry standards, fire codes, and governmental permitting requirements, required.
  • Experience with preparing or directing the development of design packages (specifications and drawings) and reviewing contractor shop drawings to ensure accuracy and compliance, required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, customers, agencies, and all levels of management, required.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and influence others positively, required.
  • High level of personal accountability and dedication to engineering excellence, required.
  • Proven technical competence with excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, required.
  • Experience in gas engineering, gas operations, utility work, industrial, heavy commercial or petrochemical industry experience, preferred.
  • Knowledge of pipeline welding, non-destructive testing, and pipeline construction, preferred.
  • Project management experience, preferred.
  • Ability to perform cost benefit analysis/conduct conceptual studies to determine best designs, preferred.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) Preferred
Physical Demands
  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
  • Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
  • Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
  • Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
