Position Summary

The EHS Manager is a technical leader and change agent responsible for integrating safety, health, and environmental performance into site operations. This role goes beyond compliance management and serves as a key business partner to operations, driving risk reduction through engineering solutions, influencing leadership, and building a proactive safety culture.

The EHS Manager owns regulatory compliance, leads hazard identification and mitigation efforts, and develops site capability to ensure safety is embedded in how work is performed, not managed as a separate function.

Key Responsibilities

Regulatory Compliance & Risk Ownership

  • Own site-level compliance with OSHA, EPA, and applicable state/local regulations
  • Assess regulatory applicability and ensure all permitting, reporting, and documentation requirements are met
  • Maintain audit-ready systems for:

    • Air, water, and waste compliance
    • Injury/illness recordkeeping
    • Chemical management and hazard communication

  • Act as the site subject matter expert and primary point of accountability for compliance outcomes

Hazard Identification & Risk Reduction

  • Lead proactive risk identification using:

    • Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs)
    • Process and task-based hazard assessments
    • Industrial hygiene evaluations (noise, air contaminants, ventilation)

  • Prioritize risks using a structured, data-driven approach
  • Ensure hazards are eliminated or controlled using the hierarchy of controls

Engineering & Systems-Based Solutions

  • Partner with operations and engineering to:

    • Design and implement engineering controls
    • Improve machine safety, LOTO systems, ventilation, and ergonomics

  • Challenge reliance on administrative controls or behavioral fixes when higher-level solutions are feasible
  • Support capital projects to ensure safety is designed into new processes and equipment

Incident Investigation & Corrective Action

  • Lead thorough incident and near-miss investigations
  • Identify true root causes using structured methodologies (e.g., 5-Why, fishbone)
  • Ensure corrective actions address system failures-not symptoms
  • Drive timely and sustainable closure of all corrective actions

Data-Driven Performance Management

  • Analyze trends in:

    • Incidents, near misses, audits, and observations

  • Translate data into clear priorities and risk-reduction strategies
  • Communicate risk and performance clearly to site leadership to drive action

Operational Integration

  • Develop a deep understanding of:

    • Manufacturing processes
    • Equipment and workflow risks
    • Operational constraints

  • Align safety solutions with production needs to enable safe and efficient operations
  • Ensure safety is embedded into SOPs, training, and daily work execution

Leadership, Influence & Culture Development

  • Actively influence supervisors, managers, and plant leadership to prioritize safety
  • Demonstrate the confidence to challenge decisions when risk is present
  • Build capability in frontline leaders to own safety within their teams
  • Engage employees in:

    • Hazard identification
    • Near-miss reporting
    • Continuous improvement efforts

Training, Engagement & Accountability

  • Develop and deliver meaningful, behavior-based training programs
  • Facilitate safety committees, audits, and engagement activities
  • Hold all levels of the organization accountable for safety performance
  • Ensure safety conversations are meaningful and actionable

Continuous Improvement & Standardization

  • Identify systemic gaps in:

    • Procedures
    • training
    • operational practices

  • Drive standardization and consistency across processes
  • Lead or support improvement initiatives that reduce risk and improve performance

Divisional & Cross-Division Project Support

  • Support and help lead enterprise-level and divisional projects that impact safety practices, improvement initiatives, and operational readiness
  • Facilitate alignment on safety expectations for new installations, process changes, and capital projects
  • Provide subject matter expertise and serve as a resource to all locations for safety related continuous improvement initiatives

Job Requirements

  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence without direct authority, driving alignment on safety and process improvement initiatives
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to clearly translate complex processes into understandable procedures and training materials
  • Proven capability to collect, interpret, and leverage data to drive decision-making and continuous improvement
  • High level of organization, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to periodically travel to support cross functional auditing

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety or Industrial, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in EHS, manufacturing, or engineering
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and general safety regulatory requirements.
