The Clinical Nurse is responsible for the assessment of patient needs, implementation of research protocols and nursing interventions, and evaluation of outcomes. The Nurse is responsible for facilitating medical research based on individual protocol requirements data collection and/or collection of specimens within the CTSI Clinical Research Center for the implementation of approved protocols. This position requires professional nursing knowledge, leadership skills, and the ability to effectively communicate with other members of the health care team. The position requires the knowledge, skills, and abilities to provide competent patient care. The Nurse reports to the Assoc. Nursing Director or Charge Nurse for shift duties. The Nurse will collaborate with all interdisciplinary services.

Department Description

The Clinical Research Services (CRS) of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) integrates multiple clinical sites across San Francisco and Oakland that provide services to clinical research investigators. The CRS provides an array of services, such as Nursing Services, Sample Processing Laboratories, and Body Composition and Exercise Laboratories. The CRS is the largest NIH funded program in the Clinical and Translational Science Institute.

  1. Assess patient care needs and gather information necessary to formulate a

  12. The Nurse evaluates the care plan's effectiveness in meeting the changing health needs of the patient. The Nurse demonstrates effective problem solving skills.
  13. The Nurse communicates pertinent information in a positive and effective manner.
  14. The Nurse coordinates clinical activities to ensure proper patient care.
  15. Acquires required supplies for collection of research data, obtaining specimens, and assisting in sample processing.
  16. Collaborates with clinical investigators, protocol staff, and CRC staff to insure smooth implementation of protocol requirements.
  17. Performs BLS and/or other specialized life support requirement designated by work area.
  18. Provides in-service education and research orientation to bedside nursing.
  19. Documents all procedures in the patient's medical record.
  20. Successful completion of annual competency testing.
  21. Obtains specimens and performs simple laboratory processing procedures conforming to all policies and procedures related to specimen handling and processing.
  22. Complies with all Ambulatory Services and Medical Center policies and procedures for infection control, safety, administrative and clinical practice. Complies with activities mandated by Joint Commission/Title 22.

  1. Maintains accuracy of specimen collection into proper media, i.e., specific test-required preservative(s) and containers.
  2. Instructs participants on specific specimen-collection procedures to acquire saliva and urine.
  3. Provides back-up processing support for specimens collected after-hours.
  4. Initiates processing, including specimen centrifuging and aliquoting for associate labs according to both laboratory policies/procedures and research protocols.

Required Qualifications:

  • BSN
  • Six (6) months of clinical experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • ONS Certification for Chemotherapy or Biotherapy or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Attention to detail; strong interpersonal skills; excellent, effective verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with subjects, team members, other departments and outside institutions; and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment while working with a diverse subject population.
  • Ability to work well independently, complete projects in a timely manner, and prioritize multiple projects to ensure the completion of essential tasks by deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with patients, co-workers, & physicians.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Good Clinical Practice.
  • Skills and experience necessary to successfully complete blood draws as well as start IV lines.
  • Strict adherence to protocols and safety guidelines.
