DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

As part of UC Legal, the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) delivers ethical, timely, efficient and high quality legal services to the University of California's ten campuses, five medical centers, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, as well as to the Board of Regents, the President, the Chancellors and other officers of the University. Its services include prosecuting and defending litigation, drafting and negotiating agreements, providing advice, counsel and interpretation of laws, regulations and policies, and assisting with development of effective compliance and risk mitigation strategies to facilitate the University's complex operations.

POSITION SUMMARY

Provides advanced paralegal support for attorneys in the Litigation practice group. Acts as liaison with internal clients, outside counsel and external organizations. Compiles data from various sources, legal digests, and practice manuals. Assembles, proofs and edits drafts of documents, such as contracts, leases, licenses and insurance policies. Prepares and files legal documents with appropriate entities. Conducts research on projects as directed by attorneys. Assists internally on trial preparation and assistance, analyzing and redacting documents, preparing chronologies, litigation holds, e-Discovery and counseling on progress of cases.

Responsibilities

  • 55%: Provides highly complex analyses across a broad spectrum of practice areas and/or administrative topics, policies and initiatives or provides in-depth, complex analyses as a specialist in the Litigation practice area. Coordinate, analyze and assist with litigation (defense and affirmative) and claims arising at the UC campuses and medical centers, including developing case strategy and other problem-solving strategies. Under the direction of a UC Legal attorney or outside counsel, conduct in-depth fact finding through witness interviews and document review. Participate in trials and hearings. Develops and advocates solutions to system issues such as Net Docs and CounselLink, including developing and administering new systems, policies, processes, or programs. Proposes, leads and/or participates on legal policy and planning committees and UC Legal practice working groups.

  • 35%: Perform document reviews in response to subpoenas, discovery requests and California Public Records Act requests for privilege that includes identifying, preserving, collecting, processing utilizing key-term (Boolean) searches and producing electronically stored information ("ESI") and paper documents utilizing eDiscovery software such as Logikcull and/or Relativity platforms.

  • 5%: Under direction of UC Legal attorneys, researches legal matters, analyzes and reports to attorneys in all areas of the Litigation group. Will further research, review, interpret, and analyze law, policy, state and federal legislation, and technical information in various areas of legal practice. Provide summaries, analyses, recommendations and positions to clients, outside counsel and UC Legal attorneys as well as reporting on new matters and settlements to the Board of Regents.

  • 5%: Manages projects and acts as a lead to staff to ensure all components of project are completed accurately and within the designated time-frames. Acts as a resource to lower-level paralegals regarding legal terminology, laws, judicial decisions, court jurisdictions and procedure. Interacts with all levels of University of California staff and external clients in the gathering of information and fact-finding.

Experience

  • Minimum of eight years of progressively responsible experience as a paralegal working in a commercial firm, government or educational institution required.

Skills and Abilities

Required Qualifications

  • Experience in and mastery of a significant body of legal knowledge relating to one or more legal practice areas represented within Office of General Counsel.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint), other relational databases, electronic mail, and the Internet. Experience applications to store, retrieve, and analyze data, and generate reports.

  • Advanced research, analytical/problem-solving skills in support of practice areas. Advanced research, analytical/problem-solving skills in support of practice areas to assemble proofs and edits drafts of documents, such as briefs, contracts, leases, licenses and insurance policies. Research laws specific to states other than California to ensure compliance when gifts of real property are received that are in different states.

  • Skills to plan and develop data management systems and procedures such as eCounsel, NetDocs, etc.

  • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and influence, both verbally and in writing; includes internal and external clients and vendors.

  • Excellent project management skills.

  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.

  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of UC processes, protocols and procedures.

  • Experience in probate, trust and estates practice is highly preferred.

  • Familiarity with University of California organizational structure, mode of governance, policies, procedures, and regulations, and the mission of the Office of General Counsel. Familiarity with Proposition 209 policies.

  • Proficiency with MS Project and project management training or certificate. Working knowledge of Visio.

  • Experience in reviewing financial statements relating to Trust and/or Will accountings.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience and/or paralegal certification required.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Paralegal certification preferred

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

The person hired will be required to reside within California and report to work on-site at UC's Office of the President (UCOP) located in Oakland, CA on a regular basis. Current policy requires that a new employee work on-site at least two days per week on Tuesday and Wednesdays ("anchor days"). In exceptional circumstances, approved by the General Counsel, candidates residing in or willing to relocate to California may be considered for a fully remote work arrangement.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
