Summary/Primary Purpose: This position serves as a key ambassador for The Salvation Army (TSA) Capital Area Command by building strong and meaningful relationships throughout Des Moines and central Iowa and increasing community awareness, engagement, volunteer involvement, and participation in The Salvation Army's programs and events. Also supports both Capital Area Command-wide initiatives and local corps community engagement efforts throughout the command.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Support Command leadership and development department with project management, coordination and successful implementation of special events, promotions and engagement initiatives.
  • Works collaboratively with Capital Area Command leadership, staff, advisory organizations, corps officers, program leaders, volunteers, donors, community partners, and external stakeholders to strengthen community connections and advance TSA goals.
  • Plans and coordinates community engagement initiatives, special events, volunteer opportunities, and public-facing activities that support the mission of TSA and fund-raising goals.
  • Assist command and corps leadership with community outreach efforts that strengthen visibility and engagement within their respective communities.
  • In partnership with the Divisional Development department, create, maintain and share information via social media, newsletters, press releases, and local media, as director. Work closely with Divisional Development staff, a resource in place to support local Corps development activities, to follow the Western Division Strategic Development Plan.
  • Supports the Donor Relations Director in identifying community engagement opportunities for networking the following: major individual, corporate and foundation donors.
  • Responsible for accurately entering and updating all key corporate and other donor contact information into databases on a daily basis and maintaining and providing data/reports to meet statistical, corps, community and divisional requests.
  • Maintains established relationships with community organizations that provide financial, volunteer or other assistance to TSA.
  • Implements and maintains the recruitment program to develop volunteers from service, clubs, schools and individuals.
  • Maintains contact reports regarding visits to donors, media, corporations, etc.
  • Participation in events and promotions outside of normal scheduled hours to include nights, weekends and holidays as required.


  • Driving is an essential function of the position.
  • All other duties as assigned.



Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises seasonal employees and volunteers.

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's degree preferred; Associate degree required, in communications, public relations, nonprofit management, marketing, event management, community development, or a combination of education and experience. Prefer at least 3 years' experience.

Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal knowledge, skill, and/or ability required for this position.



  • Project management skills to include implementation and conclusion of projects in the local and regional communities.
  • Flexible and strong organization skills for managing multiple projects or tasks simultaneously, as well as creative problem solving and team building skills.
  • A background and/or familiarity with fundraising is a plus.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and ability to access pay, personal and timekeeping data via a web-based system. Familiarity with SalesForce or similar CRM is helpful. Skills with Adobe Creative Suites is a plus.
  • Must have exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Mathematical skills include add, subtract, multiply, divide, use of common fractions and decimals.



Other Qualifications: Must pass all applicable background checks. Must possess a valid driver's license from the state in which you reside. Must be approved through The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program to drive either a Salvation Army or personal vehicle on Salvation Army business. Must successfully complete Safe from Harm training within 30 days of hire, as established by The Salvation Army.

Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical requirements include good speaking, hearing and vision ability and excellent manual dexterity. This position will require the ability to lift and/or move more than 35 pounds occasionally.

Working Conditions: The typical work environment is an office environment, with moderate to loud noise, and may include varying temperatures that may be encountered in the facility, public venues and outside. Events and community engagement may be conducted in indoor or outdoor facilities and spaces where noise and temperatures may vary.
