The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective negotiations agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations, which encompasses an expansive range of comprehensive service and business operations across the State of New Jersey. These include planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Assistant Manager Rutgers Cinema for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). The Assistant Manager will be responsible for working directly under the Cinema Manager and assist with all aspects of operating the 3-screen Cinema located on the Livingston Campus at Rutgers University.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Assists the manager with the showing of the movies and runs the concession stand as well as maintenance of movie equipment and the Cinema in general.
  • Assists the manager in the concession stand operations from purchasing the items to preparation and distribution.
  • Assists with maintaining the website, marketing to the Rutgers community and the surrounding neighborhoods. Assists with theater for events, such as film festivals, private rentals, and all other types of 4 wall deals.
  • Administrative duties include management of Cinema employees -interviewing, hiring and scheduling.
  • Assists with university relations - responsible to create, develop and maintain relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, as well as the surrounding communities, providing an exceptional customer experience.
  • Financial Duties include assistance with monitoring and driving sales numbers, pushing performance goals, merchandising and concessions.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must be familiar with movie theater operations.
  • Must possess the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and to ensure they are completed in a timely manner with high quality.
  • Must have the ability to work independently.
  • Must be able to anticipate the impact of his or her actions, be accountable for the outcomes and ensure integrity when interacting with others.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate a respectful, professional, and courteous demeanor at all times.
  • Proficiency in MS Application (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Flexible with schedule, as hours will be based on show times, evenings, weekends and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of movie theater operations- ticket sales, operating AV equipment, concession sales, customer service.
  • Ability to identify creative advertising campaigns to drive sales.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • The cinema is open 365 days a year, shows may be early morning, late night, weekends and the holidays.
  • Operations of the Cinema can begin as early as 9 am on weekends, and end as late as 2 am on weekends. Standard operations of the theater will begin with show times in the 1 o'clock hour Monday - Sunday and end with movies in the 10 o'clock hour. Summer/Winter break schedules can be shorter/later/earlier depending on the type of film doing business. All starting times are subject to how long the film runs. Rutgers Cinema assistant manager reports to the Manager of Rutgers Cinema.
