Position Overview:

The Chief of Surgery will serve as the clinical, academic, and administrative leader of the Department of Surgery. The Chief will direct all aspects of clinical services, academic programs, and Departmental operations while advancing excellence in patient care, graduate medical education, faculty development, quality improvement, and operational performance in collaboration with hospital and health system leadership.

Opportunity Details:

Departmental Leadership

  • Lead and oversee all clinical, academic, and administrative functions of the Department of Surgery.
  • Provide leadership to ensure safe, high-quality, patient-centered surgical care while promoting continuous quality improvement and regulatory compliance.
  • Establish Departmental goals aligned with institutional priorities while fostering a culture of collaboration, professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Academic and Educational Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Professor of Surgery and Emeritus Chair to advance the Department's academic mission.
  • Support and strengthen the Surgical Residency Program while ensuring compliance with ACGME accreditation standards.
  • Promote scholarly activity, research initiatives, faculty development, and mentorship of Residents, Fellows, and junior faculty.

Operational and Administrative Oversight

  • Provide oversight of Departmental operations, staffing, scheduling, and operational performance.
  • Monitor Departmental performance metrics and implement strategic initiatives to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of surgical services.

Operating Room and Surgical Services Management

  • Lead initiatives to improve operating room efficiency, surgical throughput, elective surgical utilization, and resource optimization.
  • Oversee specialty surgical service lines and contractual partnerships to ensure quality, productivity, accountability, and alignment with institutional priorities.

Quality, Safety, and Performance Improvement

  • Lead initiatives that improve surgical quality, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and Departmental performance.
  • Promote TeamSTEPPS, Just Culture principles, and a culture of continuous quality improvement throughout the Department.

Institutional Leadership

  • Collaborate with hospital administration, nursing leadership, and NYC Health + Hospitals leadership to advance organizational priorities.
  • Represent the Department of Surgery on institutional committees and system-wide initiatives.
  • Provide financial stewardship by aligning departmental resources, staffing, and clinical operations within patient care needs.
  • Maintain an active clinical practice while serving as a role model for professionalism and clinical excellence.
Qualifications
  • Board Certificationin General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery.
  • Active and Unrestricted New York State Physician License.
  • Active DEA registration.
  • Demonstrated competency in personnel management, financial oversight, quality improvement, and clinical resource management.
  • Experience in graduate medical education and surgical residency training programs preferred.

Wages and Benefits include:

Annual Base Salary: $450,000* based on 40-hour work week.

The annual total value of compensation package is estimated at $526,000**,which includes the baseline salary, 401(k) contribution, and other factors as set forth below:

  • Projectedbonus of up to $40,000 (based on previous year's average), contingent upon meeting quality and productivity targets.
  • 401(k) Company Contribution (subject to IRS contribution limits):
    • Employeesareimmediatelyvested in a 3% company contribution of base earnings. No employee match isrequired.
    • After oneyear of service, employees receive anadditional7% company contribution of base earnings. No employee match isrequired.
  • AnnualContinuing Medical Education (CME) Reimbursement.
  • GenerousAnnual Paid Time Off (PTO): Vacation, Sick, Holiday, and CME days.
  • Medical,Prescription, and Dental Coverage: Top-tier plans with employee contributions significantly below market rates.
  • LifeInsurance and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Coverage: Equal to 2x your salary (up to a maximum of $300,000) provided at no cost to you.
