Job Description:

The Engineering Technician provides direct technical support for SMT (Surface Mount Technology) assembly processes and production equipment, ensuring continuity and efficiency in manufacturing operations. This role is responsible for testing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining complex electronic and electro-mechanical systems.

Working from schematics, diagrams, and detailed instructions, this technician performs precision testing and qualification of microscopic electronic products using advanced electro-mechanical equipment. The role requires strong analytical capability to interpret data, make process and mechanical adjustments, and define and document component tolerances.

As a subject matter expert in assembly operations, this position also supports training, process improvement initiatives, and yield optimization efforts within a high-mix, low-volume manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:

SMT Operations & Technical Support

  • Operate SMT equipment including stencil printers, pick-and-place (P&P), reflow ovens (including vapor phase), AOI, SPI, and cleaning systems.

  • Program SMT equipment, including paste dispensing, placement, and inspection parameters.

  • Perform equipment troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, calibration, and qualification activities.

  • Provide first-line technical support to resolve production and quality issues on the SMT line.

  • Support New Product Introduction (NPI) builds and sustain standard production processes.

  • Perform feeder loading and assist with line changeovers.

Process, Quality & Documentation

  • Collaborate with engineering to develop and maintain process documentation and quality acceptance criteria.

  • Perform thermal profiling of reflow soldering equipment.

  • Monitor SPC data and quality metrics; identify trends and drive corrective actions.

  • Troubleshoot inspection and measurement failures; disposition held lots.

  • Support root cause investigations and CAPA/8D activities.

Training & Continuous Improvement

  • Train and certify technicians on SMT equipment, processes, and quality standards.

  • Convert complex processes into clear, standardized work instructions.

  • Identify and implement process improvements to improve yield, throughput, and work environment.

  • Participate in shift pass-downs, cross-functional meetings, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Execute small-scale projects (equipment upgrades, process improvements, workspace optimization).

Inventory & Workplace Standards

  • Maintain organized, clean, and safe work areas aligned with 5S principles.

  • Manage inventory of components, consumables, and spare parts using kanban systems.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 10-25 lbs and perform routine bending and movement.

  • Regular work in a cleanroom environment with required PPE (ESD gear, smock, gloves, etc.).

  • Ability to safely handle chemicals such as solvents and adhesives.

  • Adherence to all safety, environmental, and quality procedures.

Pay Range:

$21.90 - $28.77

Pay Range Explained:

This role in Beaverton, Oregon pays between $21.90 and $28.77 per hour, depending on your experience, skills, and background. Pay may vary in other locations. We offer a full benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability coverage, a 401(k) with company match, employee stock purchase plan (ESPP), and paid time off. You'll also be eligible for quarterly profit-sharing bonuses and flexible spending or savings accounts.
