I. JOB OVERVIEW






Job Description Summary:
The George Washington University (GW) is committed to the highest standards of ethical research and scholarly conduct. The Office of Research Integrity supports this mission by promoting compliance, integrity, and responsible research practices across the University.

The Research Compliance Manager provides leadership and operational oversight for Conflict of Interest and Commitment ( COI/C), Organizational Conflict of Interest ( OCI), and Responsible Conduct of Research ( RCR) programs, while supporting matters related to allegations of research misconduct. The role also contributes to the compliance review of research-related agreements.

The Research Compliance Manager will:

  • Lead GW's COI/C, OCI, and RCR programs, ensuring alignment with federal, state, and sponsor requirements.
  • Oversee COI/C disclosure intake, review, and management processes.
  • Serve as primary contact for investigators regarding disclosures and policy guidance.
  • Administer COI Committee activities, including agenda development, materials preparation, meeting coordination, and documentation (minutes, determinations, and management plans).
  • Support evaluation of faculty start-ups and intellectual property-related conflicts.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve policies, procedures, and compliance operations.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and maintain auditable records and reporting processes.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for concerns related to potential research misconduct.
  • In consultation with the Research Integrity Officer (RIO), coordinate and support allegations, inquiries, and investigations in compliance with applicable regulations and policies.
  • Develop, deliver, and/or coordinate training, communications, and educational programs promoting ethical and responsible research conduct.
  • Manage documentation, secure recordkeeping, reporting, and communications with federal agencies (e.g., HHS Office of Research Integrity).
  • Maintain tracking systems to ensure timely and compliant case management.
  • Collaborate with other stakeholders (e.g offices responsible for sponsored projects; ethics, compliance & risk; human research; legal counsel; technology commercialization; export control) to ensure coordinated and compliant research administration.
  • Support compliance review of Data Use Agreements (DUAs), clinical trial agreements, and other sponsored research agreements, identifying conflicts, data use risks, and regulatory considerations.
  • Support audits and compliance reviews (e.g., COI management plans, foreign influence, export control, data management, disclosure accuracy).
  • Provide subject matter expertise in support of electronic compliance systems, databases, and workflows.
  • Provide analytical, organizational, and logistical support for research integrity and compliance initiatives.
  • Participate in continuing/professional development and relevant national organizations and trainings to maintain an expert level knowledge and interest in areas of oversight, as well as related areas including faculty entrepreneurship, undue foreign influence, and clinical research-related regulatory matters.
  • This position may perform additional related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 7 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 5 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated experience in research compliance, regulatory affairs, or research administration.
  • Working knowledge of applicable frameworks (COI/C, OCI, RCR, research misconduct, foreign influence, data management).
  • Familiarity with research-related agreements (e.g., DUAs, clinical trial agreements, sponsored research contracts).
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly.
  • High level of discretion and professionalism in handling confidential matters.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively across diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with research administration systems (e.g., Huron) and standard computer applications.
  • Professional compliance certification(s).
  • Academic background in scientific or social/behavioral disciplines.
  • Experience developing training programs and analyzing compliance data.

Hiring Range $95,351.12 - $157,329.36
