Primary Purpose of the Position
The purpose of this position is to support the launch and growth of the ONLINE Master of Public Health ( MPH) program at Winston-Salem State University through excellence in graduate teaching, scholarship, and service that prepares diverse students to lead in public health practice, advance health equity, and strengthen emergency preparedness, response, and recovery in communities and organizations.

Normal Work Schedule
This is an ONLINE program that utilizes the synchronous teaching format. Graduate courses may include Monday through Friday 8 am-5 pm, evening hours, and/or Saturdays.
Department Required Skills

  • Earned doctorate (PhD, DrPH, or equivalent) in public health, emergency management, disaster science, or closely related field from an accredited institution by the position start dated.
  • Minimum of three years of professional experience in emergency planning, disaster management, emergency preparedness, or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in emergency management principles, including planning, mitigation, response, and recovery.
  • Knowledge of national preparedness frameworks, including he National Incident Management System (NIMS), Incident Command System (ICS), and National Preparedness Goals.
  • Evidence of or strong potential for teaching excellence at the graduate level.
  • Evidence of scholarly productivity or clear potential for developing an active research program.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations and multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Master of Public Health (MPH) or Master of Science in Public Health degree.
  • Experience teaching graduate-level courses in emergency management, disaster preparedness, or public health emergency response.
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications in emergency preparedness or disaster management.
  • Experience with CEPH accreditation processes and standards.
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Emergency Manager (CEM), Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES), or equivalent.
  • Track record of successful grant acquisition from federal or state agencies.
  • Experience with community-based participatory research or community engagement in emergency preparedness.
  • Expertise in one or more specialized area: pandemic preparedness, climate-related disasters, health equity in emergencies, risk communication, vulnerable populations, disaster behavior health, or emergency response to mass causality incidents.
  • Knowledge of North Carolina emergency management systems and public health infrastructure.
  • Experience working with underserved or vulnerable populations in disaster context.

  • Teaching undergraduate-level courses in areas aligned with program needs and faculty expertise.
  • Advise and mentor students, including supervision of practicum and research experiences.
  • Engage in curriculum development, assessment, and evaluation.

SCHOLARLY PRODUCTIVITY:

  • Maintain an active, independent, and collaborative research agenda, contributing to scholarly publications and grants.
  • Must facilitate presentations at well-respected local, state, national, and international professional conferences and meetings within the public health discipline.
