About the Job

Job duties or responsibilities

  • Rust flora on Berberis, Rhamnus, Frangula, Thalictrum and Ornathogalum (looking for and identifying cereal rusts from these plants that serve as the alternate hosts of cereal rusts).
These would entail field surveys, lab inoculations, deriving cultures, sequencing. This is an on-going activity for me.
  • Sexual compatibility between different rust forms (or species) on the same alternate hosts (for instance, sexual compatibility between oat crown rust and barley crown rust on Rhamnus cathartica; between stem rust and stripe rust on Berberis, etc.). These would entail cross experiments in the lab. We started setting up the experiments.
  • Identify accessory hosts of cereal rusts, such as what accessory hosts in North America that sustains the QFCSC population.
