Primary Purpose of Department
The Graduate School at UNC Charlotte fosters excellence in all dimensions of post-baccalaureate studies and is the primary advocate for graduate education and for graduate students at the University.

Established in 1985, the Graduate School offers 20+ doctoral programs, over 60 master's degree programs, and more than 30 graduate certificate programs in a wide variety of fields and specialties ranging from architecture, biomedical engineering, computing, engineering, and health administration to history, teacher education, creative writing, business, nursing, and social work.

The Graduate School has over 700 members of the Regular Graduate Faculty teaching and mentoring more than 5,000 graduate students who come from nearly every state in the union and from a variety of countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, Central and South America.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Director of Recruitment provides overall direction and management of recruitment activities for the Graduate School at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The Director will bring innovative ideas for best-in-class recruitment strategies to grow Charlotte's prospective student pipelines in order to meet ambitious enrollment goals.
Summary of Position Responsibilities

  • This position provides strategic leadership for graduate recruitment efforts, with a focus on developing and implementing approaches to increase the graduate student population. The Director works in close partnership with campus stakeholders, including the International Student and Scholar Office, Undergraduate Admissions, and graduate programs, to align recruitment strategies with institutional priorities.
  • The Director represents the University in a variety of settings, both on and off campus, and exercises sound judgment and autonomy in communicating information about academic programs, admissions processes, policies, and funding opportunities across a broad portfolio of graduate offerings.
  • The position requires the ability to synthesize complex information and provide guidance to prospective students, families, and partners, supporting informed decision-making across domestic and international audiences.
  • The Director designs, implements, and evaluates recruitment initiatives that support enrollment goals, while collaborating with academic programs to enhance program-level recruitment efforts and build capacity through training, consultation, and shared best practices.
  • This role develops and maintains relationships with external partners, including industry, educational institutions, and alumni, to expand recruitment pipelines and strengthen engagement with prospective student populations.
  • The Director regularly assesses recruitment strategies and outcomes, using data and insights to inform continuous improvement and ensure effectiveness in meeting enrollment objectives.


Strategic Planning & Enrollment Design
  • Develops, implements, and assesses data-informed graduate recruitment strategies that support University and Graduate School enrollment goals. Leverages strong strategic thinking, planning, and problem-solving skills to align efforts with institutional priorities.
Enrollment Initiatives
  • Designs, implements, and supports enrollment initiatives that contribute to the recruitment of a qualified graduate student population. Applies project management, innovation, and cross-functional collaboration skills to advance institutional goals.
Supervision & Team Leadership
  • Supervises full-time staff, temporary employees, and student workers, providing leadership, mentorship, and performance management to support team effectiveness and professional development. Requires leadership, coaching, and organizational skills.
Event Representation
  • Represents the Graduate School at recruitment events, professional conferences, and external engagements, communicating effectively with prospective students and stakeholders. Exhibits strong presentation, interpersonal, and professional communication skills.
Technology and Systems
  • Leads the optimization and effective use of recruitment technologies and systems, including CRM functionality, communication workflows, and process automation, to enhance efficiency and the prospective student experience. Requires technical proficiency, systems thinking, and attention to detail.
Data, Reporting & Insights
  • Maintains, analyzes, and interprets graduate recruitment data to identify trends, inform decision-making, and evaluate the effectiveness of recruitment strategies. Utilizes analytical, critical thinking, and data visualization skills to communicate insights to stakeholders.
Strategic Partnerships & Recruitment Enablement
  • Builds and sustains collaborative partnerships with faculty, staff, and campus stakeholders while providing training, guidance, and resources to support effective graduate recruitment practices. Fosters a culture of shared responsibility and continuous improvement across programs through consultative engagement and capacity-building efforts. Demonstrates strong relationship management, facilitation, communication, and change management skills.
Committees / Service
  • Serves on institutional committees and contributes to cross-campus initiatives that support graduate enrollment and student success. Demonstrates collaboration, organizational awareness, and the ability to navigate complex environments.
Marketing Collaboration
  • Collaborates with marketing and communications partners to inform the development and refinement of recruitment materials, messaging, and outreach strategies. Applies strategic communication, branding awareness, and attention to audience needs
Minimum Education/Experience
  • Masters degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or other relevant area. Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Three years of progressive administrative experience in admissions required.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge of graduate education and admissions processes, with progressive experience in graduate recruitment, enrollment management, or student services. Experience developing or implementing recruitment strategies is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with a broad range of student populations, including an understanding of domestic and/or international recruitment landscapes, student needs, and enrollment trends.
  • Proficiency with recruitment technologies and systems (e.g., CRM platforms, communication tools, data systems), with the ability to leverage technology to improve processes, efficiency, and the prospective student experience. Slate experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and operate effectively in fast-paced, high-volume environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships and communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, and external partners.
