CWP uses a public health model and effective prevention and health promotion strategies to help students make informed decisions about their personal health and wellbeing. Our multidisciplinary team of professionals addresses many issues that are important to students' health, wellbeing, and safety, including interpersonal violence, substance use, recovery from substance use disorders, sexual health, suicide prevention, mental health, and general wellness. | Primary Purpose of Position |
Under the direction of the Associate Director for Prevention and Wellness Initiatives, the Assistant Director for Prevention & Health Education is responsible for leading and managing a team of peer health educators, overseeing their training, program implementation, and overall performance while promoting healthy behaviors and wellness initiatives on campus. |
| Summary of Position Responsibilities |
Duties and Responsibilities
Program Implementation and Management:
- Manage the daily operations of the peer health educators to support the work of the Center for Wellness Promotion and the overall Health and Wellbeing Unit.
- Implement and evaluate evidence-informed initiatives related to general wellness and safer sex/sexual health by assessing the effectiveness of specific campus and community partnerships.
- Assist the Associate Director with overseeing fiscal resources, including student payroll and program-area operational expenses
- Propose, track, and ensure the approved budget for Peer Educator salaries in the Peer Educator fund/budget
- Coordinate and oversee the delivery of prevention programs and presentation requests across campus, including weekly tabling events (i.e., PHE Wellness Wednesdays, What's Your Plan A).
- Update, deliver, and oversee the peer educators presenting educational materials and presentations (i.e., What's Your Plan A, Between Me & You).
- Oversee the inventory of safer sex supplies by managing donations and purchases; fill individual and bulk order requests.
- Stay abreast of current trends, research, and best practices in health promotion to continuously enhance program offerings.
- Collect and review data related to health promotion programs to measure effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
Leadership and Supervision:
- Supervise and mentor a graduate student employee, providing guidance and support to ensure the success of initiatives and programs, as appropriate.
- Supervise and mentor a team of 8 - 15 Peer Health Educators
- Provide ongoing daily support and guidance to peer health educators, addressing concerns, facilitating feedback, and fostering learning and professional development.
- Assign peer educators to specific health promotion initiatives and responsibilities based on their skills and interests.
- Monitor Peer Health Educator performance and address any concerns related to program delivery.
- Monitor program and presentation delivery to ensure high-quality, consistent, and accurate messaging across all outreach efforts.
- Identify, recruit, and hire qualified students to become peer educators. (Typically, recruitment occurs in the Spring for the fall semester)
- Create a collaborative/team environment and culture.
- Oversee scheduling and payroll of the Peer Health Educators.
Outreach and Collaboration:
- Coordinate outreach events to raise awareness and promote healthy behaviors within the university community.
- Support the Associate Director in fostering partnerships with other departments on campus (i.e., the HWB Unit and other Student Affairs departments, Academic Affairs, etc.) to coordinate prevention efforts and promote comprehensive student wellbeing.
- Implement goals and targeted by the Associate Director/CWP to reach specific student populations (i.e., First Gen, Graduate, International Students, etc.) based on identified needs and risk factors.
- Establish and maintain relationships with external partners, community organizations, and agencies to leverage resources and promote collaboration
Peer Educator Training and Student Professional Development:
- In consultation with the Associate Director, implement comprehensive training for new peer educators covering topics such as prevention strategies, communication skills, group facilitation, and relevant health information.
- Implement the NASPA Certified Peer Educator (CPE) training by either teaching or guiding the students through the self-paced program to become certified. CPE is a comprehensive, 12-hour foundation training that has 8 distinct modules, and the course should be taught during a training over a long weekend or during fall training.
- Conduct or invite/coordinate different departments to present ongoing training and professional development opportunities for new and existing peer educators.
General Administration:
- Contribute to a positive, friendly work environment that encourages, enhances, and demonstrates collaboration, teamwork, and professionalism among staff, students, and participants on a daily basis.
- Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, in-service education sessions, and other divisional, unit, or departmental meetings.
- Prepare monthly reports highlighting program area key metrics and outcomes.
- Serve on University committees, as needed or assigned.
- Collaborate with the Health & Wellbeing Unit.
- Participate in other Division of Student Affairs initiatives/programs as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director and/or by the CWP Leadership Team.

| Minimum Education/Experience |
- Master's degree in Public Health, Health Education, Health Promotion, or a related field (i.e., Counseling, Social Work, Higher Education, etc.)
- Two or more years of experience in the field of health promotion (graduate assistantship experience may be considered)
- Proven experience in health education program development, implementation, and evaluation
- Experience managing and developing student employees and volunteers
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, and presentation skills

- Two or more years of work experience in health promotion with a focus on general wellness and sexual health, particularly in the higher education setting
- Strong understanding of public health principles and evidence-based practices
- Familiarity with current health issues and trends relevant to young adults/the university population
- Knowledge of current data, research, and best practices in the field of college health promotion
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively train and mentor peer health educators
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills of student employees, with the ability to motivate and empower others
