Job Description

Phlebotomist Representative II - Hospital - Silver Spring, MD, Monday to Friday, 4:00 AM to 8:00 AM, with rotational weekends

Represents the face of our company to patients within the hospital systems at Quest Diagnostics, both as part of their routine health management or for insights into life-defining health decisions. The Phlebotomist II draws quality blood samples from patients while following established practices and procedures. The Phlebotomist II has direct contact with patients and creates an atmosphere of trust and confidence while explaining procedures to patients and drawing blood specimens in a skillful, safe and accurate manner. The Phlebotomist II will demonstrate Quest Leadership Behaviors while focusing on process excellence skills and sensitivity to confidentiality and accuracy to patient information. Successful applicants will be assigned to work in a fast-paced hospital environment. Performing phlebotomy tasks in extreme patient and environmental conditions.

Pay range: $23.20 - $24.90 / hour

Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. Successful candidates may be eligible to receive annual performance bonus compensation.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection on patients of all age groups, including but not limited to pediatric and trauma patients.
  • Accurately label and process specimens according to laboratory protocol.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of phlebotomy carts and work areas.
  • Administer oral solutions according to established training, such as Glucola.
  • Data entry and processing specimens including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens as required by test order, where applicable.
  • Perform departmental-related clerical duties when assigned such as data entry, inventory, stock supplies, and answer phones when needed.
  • Read, understand and comply with departmental policies, protocols and procedures: (i.e. Procedure Manuals, Safety Manual, Compliance Manual, Employee Handbook, Quality Assurance Manual); and ensure that all staff members follow instructions.
  • Observe infection control and safety protocols at all times.
  • Assist with compilation and submission of monthly statistics and data.
  • Maintain all appropriate phlebotomy logs in a timely manner and based on frequency, such as maintenance logs and temperature logs.
  • Responsible for completing all data entry requirements accurately including data entry of patient registration; entry of test order from requisition or pulling order from database; managing Standing Orders.
  • Complete training courses and keep up to date with the latest phlebotomy techniques.
  • Assist with special projects and teams.
  • Stay up to date on company communications and assist with the distribution of technical information to the work group.
  • With appropriate training, act as mentor, point of contact and training resource for new employees, assist with transition into the hospital work environment and the familiarity with established procedures.
  • Assist with periodic inventory counts.
  • Communicate professionally with clients to resolve or refer, and document problems, prepare problem documentation and report critical issues as they occur.
  • Assist supervisors with the implementation of SOPs for phlebotomy services in accordance with Quest Diagnostics guidelines.
  • Ensure facilities are neat, clean and in good repair, takes appropriate action to advise Group Leader or Supervisor of required repairs and maintenance.
  • Rotate through inpatient, outpatient, physicians' offices, and ED settings as required.
  • Accountable for sign-off of new hire initial, bi-annual or annual training competencies.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as needed.
  • Depending on site operations and model, Hospital Phlebotomists may also support pre-analytical laboratory functions, including but not limited to:

    • Receives, sorts, racks, and prepares specimens.
    • Picks up, transports, delivers, and manages pending specimens for technical departments in accordance with established workflows.
    • Packages and prepares specimens for send-out testing in compliance with regulatory, safety, and courier requirements.
    • Identifies issues related to specimen type, integrity, labeling, or missing/incomplete information during specimen sorting, racking, centrifugation, storage, and delivery.
    • Resolves specimen-related issues within the scope of the role or escalates concerns appropriately to ensure timely problem resolution and continuity of testing
    • Demonstrates understanding of compliance and regulatory policies related to test ordering and specimen handling.
    • Develops the ability to research test order information using translation tables, laboratory information systems, and the laboratory Directory of Services.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned in support of pre-analytical operations.



Qualifications:

Required Work Experience:



  • At least one year of phlebotomy experience required, inclusive of heel stick, pediatric, geriatric, and capillary collections.
  • Flexible and available based on staffing needs, which includes weekends, holidays, on-call and overtime.
  • Must have reliable transportation, valid driver's license, and clean driving record, if applicable.



Preferred Work Experience:



  • Minimum 2 years of phlebotomy experience.
  • Experience within hospital environment.
  • Customer service or healthcare experience preferred.
  • Keyboard/data entry experience.



Physical and Mental Requirements:



  • Lift light to moderately heavy objects. The normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying objects. Objects in the weight range of 1 to 15 pounds are lifted and carried frequently; objects in the weight range of 16 to 25 pounds are lifted and carried. Objects exceeding 41 pounds are not to be lifted or carried without assistance.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time; requires long hours of eye-hand coordination.
  • Must be able to use stairs and/or elevators to move between floors as required by the job.
  • Must be able to perform repetitive tasks with dominant hand frequently to constantly throughout the day.
  • Position may require travel.
  • Extensive use of phone and PC.
  • Fine dexterity with hands/steadiness.
  • Positional Coordination (balancing, bending/kneeling, pushing/pulling, reaching/twisting).

  • Must demonstrate superior customer focus; engaging in positive interactions; ability to communicate openly and transparently with peers, supervisors and patients; ability to accelerate and embrace change throughout Quest; and knowledge of our business.
  • Capable of handling multiple priorities in a high-volume setting.
  • Must be able to make decisions based on established procedures and exercise good judgment.

Education:



  • High School Diploma or Equivalent. (Required)



Technical Training or Professional Licensing:
