Position Overview

The following is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. This list of duties is illustrative only, and is not a comprehensive listing of all the functions and responsibilities performed.

Note: This position is funded through an external grant. Continued employment beyond the fiscal year is contingent upon continued funding.

Position Summary:
The Academic Advisor is responsible for assisting and encouraging students to remain enrolled in post-secondary education, complete their degrees, and/or transfer to a four-year institution. This position reports directly to the Director of Student Support Services.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide academic, financial, career, and personal advising, as well as appropriate resource referrals, to low-income, first-generation students and students with disabilities enrolled in academic programs to support student retention and completion.
  • Encourage students to complete Associate Degrees (academic or vocational) or vocational certificate programs.
  • Develop, monitor, and evaluate tutoring programs.
  • Maintain advising and counseling records.
  • Develop Individual Academic Plans for program participants.
  • Conduct study skills workshops and other educational workshops as appropriate.
  • Assist students with the completion of financial aid and admissions forms.
  • Support campus and community outreach initiatives and provide related support services.
  • Supervise tutorial programs, workshops, and tutor training.
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively relate to at-risk students, college instructors, counselors, parents, and community members.
  • Understand and maintain student confidentiality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or deemed necessary.

Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Guidance or a related field.
  • Three years of experience providing counseling and academic advisement to secondary and post-secondary students.
  • Three years of experience working with disadvantaged, racially and culturally diverse students, including students with disabilities.

Working Conditions

  • The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to handle or feel objects, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee frequently sits and occasionally stands or walks. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision requirements for this position include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
